Bly Manor is Different From Hill House, Explains Mike Flanagan

Mike Flanagan, creator of The Haunting of Bly Manor and its predecessor has explained how The Haunting of Bly Manor is different from Hill House. Hill House was based on the novel of the same name by Shirley Jackson. But then the Haunting franchise has turned into an anthology series for Netflix with the second season.

The forthcoming new season, entitled The Haunting of Bly Manor, is a completely new ghost story modified from the award-winning novella The Turn of the Screw by Henry James. Some actors of the Haunting of Hill House cast will be back for the new season. And for sure as the creator says, Bly Manor is different from Hill House.

In the critically appreciated Haunting of Hill House, Flanagan altered Jackson’s story about the Crain family, changing between their past and present. The progressions in the past brought out their time living in the strange Hill House and uncovered the horrific events that happened there. In the present, the grown-up Crain siblings eventually were brought face-to-face with the house again, and the murky events that haunted them. The Haunting of Bly Manor, which is set in the 1980s, follows Victoria Pedretti’s Dani Clayton when she is hired to be a new au pair for two troubled children at the eerie estate in the English town of Bly. The whole of the Bly Manor is different from Hill House.

Bly Manor is different from Hill House, A Unique Adaptation Of The Novel

The Haunting of Bly Manor Will Hit Netflix In Autumn Entertainment

In a brand new featurette for The Haunting of Bly Manor, Flanagan, Pedretti, and executive producer Trevor Macy tease what’s unique in the next installment of the Haunting franchise. Calling Bly Manor a “gothic romance,” Flanagan hinted that the supernatural components of the new sequel will be used in an identical way to how they were employed in Hill House, but that Bly Manor will concentrate on a much different sort of family than its predecessor did. Flanagan explains how Bly Manor is different from Hill House.

“Similar to The Haunting of Hill House, I really wanted to play more with ghosts as an expression of emotional those that we do carry around — how the past and present can echo each other, those moments don’t fall like dominoes, they fall like confetti. Though Haunting of Hill House is about a very tight family, Bly Manor is about strangers, a family that is created. All of the people that inhabit Bly Manor come from completely different backgrounds, and get to know each other through friendship, tension, conflict, and love. What sets Bly Manor apart is that at its heart, it’s a love story. It’s a gothic romance story.”

Unlike its predecessor, it’s likely that The Haunting of Bly Manor won’t be a straightforward adaptation of the novel. Flanagan has expanded more characters, further indicating his responsibility to creating strong interpersonal connections between the show’s characters. In Hill House, the family’s effort blended handily with the show’s metaphysical and mysterious aspects, developing a horror experience that moved beyond cheap scares. With Bly Manor, Flanagan seems to be pertaining to the same principles by weaving romance into the classic ghost story, which will certainly result in a detailed horror experience that will satisfy fans. This is how Bly Manor is different from Hill House.

So far, it seems like The Haunting of Bly Manor will give fans with similar ghostly scares that made the first installment so memorable, and luckily, the release of the season was not halted by the coronavirus. That means Haunting enthusiasts are only a few weeks away from seeing if The Haunting of Bly Manor can live up the reputation of its predecessor.
