The show brings an epic love story for audiences between Elena Gilbert and the Salvatore brothers, Stefan and Damon.
The Vampire Diaries’ showrunner revealed the original plan:
The finale episode saw the Salvatore brothers fight over who would die to save Mystic Falls. In the end, Stefan played by Paul Wesley sacrificed his future with his wife Caroline played by Candice King to save his brother Damon played by Ian Somerhalder, and of course the Mystic Falls, he has loved the town for nearly two centuries. But it could be have been very different from the original one which may shock you.
Stelena not Delena: Makers wanted Elena to end up with Stefan
During an interview, Kevin Williamson told Deadline, that he had a different storyline for the finale. Yes, he wanted to end the show with Stefan, not Damon. Kevin revealed they literally wanted Elena Gilbert to find her way back to Stefan Salvatore. He said “We lost Elena in season 6, we couldn’t go back. You know Nina only come back for one episode—maybe if she had come back for the whole season, we could even have warped back towards that, but you can’t just do it in 42 minutes”
Basically, the showrunners blamed actress Nina Dobrev, her exit derailed that idea, because by that point of the story. It was all about Delena. She said “I felt like we had to make a commitment to seeing Damon and Elena through to the end”
Plec further explained, “If Nina Dobrev had never left the show. I would’ve loved to have been able to see if Stefan and Elena could’ve find their way back to each other”.
