Cobra Kai’ Sam LaRusso: Hero Or Villain?

Sam LaRusso, one of the main protagonists of Cobra Kai is suspected to actually be one of the show’s villains. Find out the truth?

Based on the original Karate kid movie, Cobra Kai is a show set thirty-four years after the events of 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament, a down-and-out Johnny Lawrence seeks redemption by reopening the infamous Cobra Kai dojo, reigniting his rivalry with now a successful Daniel LaRusso.

The showrunners have done a splendid job in creating nuanced characters having both, compelling motivations and significant flaws. Sam LaRusso, one of the main protagonists of the show is suspected to actually be one of the show’s villains. So far, the bad side of the character’s personality has overwhelmed the fans over her good side. This has led to the popular fan theory suggesting that the protagonist is indeed an antagonist of the series.

Sam LaRusso’ Journey:

Sam LaRusso has only been a minor character throughout the first season. She falls out with Aisha, makes up later, starts dating Miguel, and then leaves him for acceptable reasons, namely his undertaking of the “No Mercy” philosophy of Cobra Kai. A more action-oriented version of the character is observed in the second season, as she resumes her Miyagi Do Karate training with her father, Daniel.

This marks the beginning of a foul rivalry between Sam LaRusso and Cobra Kai’s Tory Nichols and Sam’s main arc through the show so far begins! The girls immediately go off on the wrong foot, eventually, the grudge between them got raised to new heights and brutal levels that ultimately end up leaving Sam traumatized.

Season 3 goes on to unravel the difficult life that Tory’s been leading. She works multiple jobs, trying to sum up money so she could help her sick mother and younger brother, and even after all the trouble that she endures, she still tries to live as a  normal teenager. Sam on the other hand has been repeatedly behaved heartless, even after when Miguel tries to tell her about all the hardships that Tory has endured, Sam replies with a very cold statement- “Everybody has a sob story” a highly insensitive thing to say as someone who never had any difficulty in life.

Overall, Sam is portrayed as snooty, pretentious, and unconcerned with the experiences of others. The ConclusionThe truth however remains undisclosed.

A lot of questions remain unanswered. Like is the theory correct? Is Sam LaRusso really the antagonist? Although there is no one else other than Sam herself is to blame for the opinion that the fans formed of her, it is yet to be revealed if all of the ideas that people have about Sam are true or she finally ends up redeeming herself for all her previous deeds.
