The release of God of War (2018) saw Cory Barlog totally reinventing the gameplay and storytelling aspects of the fan-favorite God of War franchise. Receiving universal acclaim and selling over 10 million copies, God of War (2018) became the fastest-selling and best-selling entry in the franchise. It’s all but known that this series has shifted from Greek mythology to Norse mythology. Albeit altered to fit the narrative, the game’s rich Norse lore is told by Mimir whose head is dangling by the hip of the bloody Ghost of Sparta! With hints and Easter eggs from the game, here are our BOLD predictions for the upcoming untitled God of War sequel.
It will be called Fimbulwinter, not Ragnarok

With the release of the upcoming God of War teaser, there is a wide-spread belief that sequel to God of War (2018) will be called God of War: Ragnarok. ‘Ragnarok is coming’ is akin to Game of Thrones’ ‘Winter is coming’ which was revealed in its first season and it didn’t arrive till the last moment of the seventh season.
In Norse mythology, Fimbulwinter is a three-year-long prophesized winter of heavy snow and blizzards which serves as the preceding ominous event for Ragnarok. With other media releases, it is revealed that after Baldur’s death, the winter continues to worsen with blizzards and the freezing of The Lake of Nine. Sindri notes Hel-Walkers and strange new beasts roaming the lands. This new trilogy of the God of War franchise will set in the Norse world and Ragnarok, the annihilation of the Norse world, can’t just come in the second game.
The Norns will be main antagonists
“You cannot change your destiny, mortal…” echoed the Sisters of Fate.
The OG God of War 2 fans will remember the odyssey to the Island of Creation to challenge the Sisters of Fate itself. Well, consider the Norns the Norse version of the Sisters of Fate. God of War always follows a trend in their boss fights. The previous trilogy had gigantic monsters as the first boss of each game: Hecantonchires, Basilisk, Scylla, Hydra, Colossus, and Poseidon. It only makes sense that the upcoming untitled God of War sequel follows suit of its predecessors by introducing something similar to Sisters of Fate in the second game of the main trilogy.
Freya will get her wings back
“I will rain down every agony, every violation imaginable, upon you… I will parade your cold body from every corner, of every realm, and feed your soul to the vilist filth in Hel, that is my promise!” Freya threatened Kratos as she mourned over the dead body of her son.
God of War (2018) saw an ally, Freya, turn into an enemy vowing vengeance vehemently on Kratos. It is also that she is the queen of the hard-to-beat bosses, Valkyries, cursed by Odin to never leave Midgard or harm any living creature either by physical means or by her magic. He even stripped Freya of her Valkyrie wings and hid them in a secret location. Since she won’t be supporting Kratos and Atreus in the upcoming sequel, it makes sense for her to attain her wings back to further her development as a character.
Kratos will cross the bridge
“Never go there you understand?” warns Mimir, most serious we have ever seen him.
After seeing a visage of his dead father Zeus in the distance in Helheim, a baffled Kratos enquired about the place from Mimir, only to receive a warning from the head to keep away from that place. With the danger looming over the other side of the bridge already set, it only makes sense for Kratos to do what he has been doing in all the previous games. Defying the odds and doing the impossible.
Thor will defeat Kratos:
“…Thor came for us” Atreus reveals his dream to Kratos.
How do you set up a challenge for the Ghost of Sparta who has already wiped out the entire Greek pantheon? By introducing an equally badass God who has wiped out the entire race of Giants: Thor. The son of Odin has already gained a lot of recognition in the pop-culture world, thanks to MCU but this version of Thor is not your superhero type.
In fact, he is a genocidal maniac who hungers for carnage. Although he later gets his revenge, Kratos is no stranger to defeat; he has been beaten and even killed in his earlier games by various gods and sometimes even mortals like Alrik the Barbarian King. It only makes sense that Kratos fight Thor in a cataclysmic battle and gets beaten by the Aesir to find himself trapped in the depths of Helheim. This won’t be the first time Kratos being trapped in the underworld.
