Here’s Everything We Know! Lucy Liu has officially been cast as one of the villains in Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
The 52 years old American actress of Asian origins joins the sequel of Shazam! (2019) where she will be portraying the character Kalypso, the sister of Helen Mirren’s villainous character Hespera. A versatile actress, Lucy Liu has appeared across a spectrum of movie genres ranging from kid-friendly animated movies like Kung Fu Panda series where she voiced Master Viper and one of the most violent action movies, Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003) where she played a Katana wielding mob boss. In Shazam, she is going to be a part of a trio of villainous sisters who are from the lineage of the Greek pantheon. Keeping in mind, Lucy Liu is no different from playing a member of a group of three badass women on screen as she played one of the main protagonists in the Charlie’s Angel movie series.
Who is Kalypso?
The character Kalypso hasn’t yet debuted in the DC comics as per the current DC database and there is no comic book counterpart of such name, Kalypso might have been derived from a Greek Mythological figure called Calypso, whose name literally means “she who conceals”.
Although the name ‘Calypso’ is used by many in the Greek mythology but in almost all the myths she is a depicted as a nymph, a minor female nature deity. Here are a few major figures who were referred to as Calypso in the Greek mythology.
- Calypso was a nymph who kept the mythological Greek Hero Odysseus with her on the island of Ogygia for 7 years.
- Calypso was an Oceanid, one of the 3000 water-nymphs, sired by the Greek Titans Oceanus and Tethys.
- Calypso was a Nereid, one of the 50 sea-nymphs, sired by Nereus, the Old Man of the Sea, and Doris, an Oceanid.
- In some versions, Calypso was one of the Hesperides, daughter of Greek Titan Atlas and the sister of Aipois, Antheia, Donakis, Mermesa, Nelisa and Tara.
It is more than likely that Lucy Liu’s Kalypso will be an amalgamation of all of the above mentioned versions with certain selective elements to fit the narrative of the story. The direction indicates that she could be one of the Hesperides and the daughter of Atlas while also being a sea or water nymph thus having water based magical powers.
Lucy Liu’s casting as Kalypso confirms the rumors of 3 villainous sisters appearing in the movie as Helen Mirren has been cast as Hespera, the eldest sister of the trio and Rachel Zegler has been cast as the youngest sister whose name is yet to be disclosed.
