Here’s why Season 5 of The Handmaid’s Tale should be its last.
Based on the 1985 novel by Margaret Atwood of the same name, “The Handmaid’s Tale” is an American Dystopian tragedy TV series created by Bruce Miller. The story revolves around the sort of misogynic society where fertile women called “Handmaids” are subjected to child-bearing slavery. The series was ordered by Hulu for a straight-to-series order of 10 episodes but because the first season was a massive success, the show continued even further. The show is currently on its fourth season and the creators should think about putting an end to it soon.
The reason being the repetitive nature of the story. The original story of June Osborne (the lead character played by Elizabeth Moss) from the novel came to an end in season 1 while saving the rest for later. Afterward, they started delivering more content believing there was more to June’s story, however, considering the state that the show is in and has been it is a popular opinion that the show should end or else risk ruining the show even further.
The Causes Leading To The Birth Of The Notion.
The reason why The Handmaid’s Tale got so much appreciation was because of its story, although set in the past but still too relevant in the present. Sadly, after the show continued to move away from the novel, the show has been moving in circles, repeating the same chain of events in a different manner. Firstly, June somehow gets captured by Gilead’s forces, then she is subject to intense torment and torture in order to extract information from her, and then she finds some means of escape and runs for her life.
The Handmaid’s Tale season 3 ended on a crucial cliffhanger where June is shot while she attempted to help numerous Marthas escape from the Gilead’s grasp along with 86 children and head to Canada. She survives and the story started taking the same turn during her time at Commander Keyes’ farm and that has been happening for quite some time. Before the show starts becoming more and more predictable, it would be best to finish The Handmaid’s Tale or else face a drop in viewership.
Also contributing to the cause is the unnecessary violence taking place on the show. although The Handmaid’s Tale has never been too shy to display the darkness persisting in society, the recent graphics on the show have become just too violent, intensely horrifying, and highly unnecessary. The gruesome scenes in episode 1 and episode 3 were a little too much.
Forcing a 14-year-old to kill a captured guardian, the severe torture of June where she is waterboarded and locked in a box while she had to witness the execution of Marathas just left the viewers mentally disturbed. Violence should be included in the story but it should not become the story, such as in the case of The Handmaid’s Tale. With the news about the premiere of season 4, came the announcement that the show had been renewed for another season. Keeping the big fanbase of the show in mind, the makers should think about adapting the Novel’s end and finish June’s story before a certain downfall arrives ruining the show’s legacy.
