We are absolutely delighted, feeling lucky and blessed to be seeing Chris Hemsworth playing the role of the “God of Thunder” aka THOR in Marvel Cinematic Universe. But did you know, it was not like he instantly got the role and was in fact about to lose it to this actor? Imagine this now, there’s no way you can imagine anybody else fitting that description and having such a ripped physique and saving the Earth every time and again. To be honest, there were several times, he almost lost playing Thor. Let’s read ahead to find more.
Chris himself mentioned how he was about to lose his role to no one else but his brother. Talking about the Thor auditions, he recalls how happy he was seeing that the role’s description demands somebody having height and size as his. Speaking to W he mentioned, “I clearly remember reading the description and it was mentioned ‘Must be over 6’3’’ and 200 pounds’ and I thought ‘Oh wow…that’s cool, that’s one thing that fits me. He revealed ‘Most of the time I have to lie about my height and say that I’m a little shorter and so on. I would only get cast/auditioned for a football player or something.
THE BIG REVELATION
Chris stated that it was ‘Liam Hemsworth’ who was about to snatch this role away. Liam too sent his audition tape and also got a callback. So I thought ‘great, this is up to my alley. Chris came into the audition with Kenneth Branagh and thought he had absolutely smashed it out of the park. But then he never heard anything back. And days converted into months and still, there wasn’t any response. But Liam had also sent the tape and he got a call and then another call and was like in the last 4-5 people.
But luck was in his favor, because he got a 2nd chance for the audition and this time he didn’t make a single mistake and actually nailed it. He recalls “I remember sitting in Vancouver, shooting for Cabin in the Woods with ‘Drew Goddard’ and ‘Joss Whedon’ and both of them were looking at the top 4-5 guys for the role of Thor. And they asked me “Why aren’t you in here? What happened? I replied ‘I guess I blew my audition’. And they were shocked. Then my manager fixed up an audition for me and I did it in Vancouver in the hotel room with my mum playing ‘Anthony Hopkins’ role.
He added, ‘I guess she must have nailed it because it got me a 2nd audition and I was charged and pumped. Maybe also because Liam had gotten ahead of me, it’s a small family so sibling rivalry is very normal’. Then it went on pretty smoothly and moved very quickly from there.
Liam Hemsworth is as charming and an amazing actor too, but Chris Hemsworth as Thor is all heart. With his charisma, personality, the way he lifts his hammer, MCU was intelligent in choosing him in the end. It has paid them off really beautifully because Thos is one of the most loved characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Even with the bandage on one eye (Avengers Infinity War) he still rules the heart of millions of his fans.
