The struggle of Gay & Lesbian community has come a long way, especially in Hollywood. With the representation freedom Netflix offers, some of the best LGBTQ shows are present here. Netflix also reinvented some of the cable series giving a lot of options for people to choose from. There are a wide variety of shows ranging from sitcoms to sci-fi cult classics. Most of them are a mix of drama & comedy and some of them are listed below.
In this modern era, gay characters on screen are nothing new so many Netflix shows have moved on to explore more grave topics like same-sex relationships between women, challenges this community faces. The best of these shows have one common thing – they don’t ASSUME.
SEX EDUCATION
This is a British drama that premiered on Netflix in 2019 and is one of the best shows for teenagers. The series is all about ‘uncomfortable topics’ letting people know of the mystery called SEX. Otis Milburn (aka Asa Butterfield) becomes the unofficial sex therapist of the school along with his gay best friend Eric Effiong (aka Ncuti Gatwa). Otis tries to solve the issues such as homophobia, sexual performance, STDs, and sexualities such as pansexuality & asexuality.
DEAR WHITE PEOPLE
Justin Smear’s show isn’t just a commentary on black politics; it also shows how people discriminate against multiple things. Based on Simien’s 2014 movie, this is one of the very few shows that show the discussion of LGBTQ characters of color, showing experiences that don’t just include white gay men. The show is not limited to just one LGBTQ character.
FEEL GOOD
This show follows a lesbian comedian who is new to the concept of same sex relationship. In this classic TV show, Mae is finding it difficult to date George. Later it’s also revealed that Mae is trying to recover from heroin intake. This is a short and sweet series with 2 seasons having 6 episodes each.
ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK
This 2013 Netflix drama was one of the main shows that bought Netflix into limelight and is also some of the very few TV shows to have bisexual characters. The series spent years discussing Piper’s sexuality – labeling her as ‘straight’ and ‘lesbian’ from time to time, when show finally dropped the word bisexual. The way people look at her relationship is exactly what happens with the bisexual community. This is an award winning drama with a very strong fan base.
SCHITT’S CREEK
Having one of the most popular gay couples, this quickly gained popularity over the course of 6 seasons. Besides his formerly rich family, David is a spoiled art gallery owner who is struggling and trying to have a life for himself. In the 3rd season, Patrick enters as the love interest David and the two have a very long-lasting relationship.
SENSE8
This one isn’t a show about gays; instead, it revolves around the life of transgender woman Nomi and her cisgender partner Amanita. Seeing the relationship of Nomi onscreen is very inspiring. But the show isn’t all about Nomi’s relationship but takes this one as a background story.
GRACE & FRANKIE
The Emmy nominated show starts with 2 men (in love apart from being friends and business partners) coming out to their wives and the cyclone that follows after they end their decades-long happy marriage. The 2 women don’t like each other very much but prefer to hang out together instead of starting over altogether. The way they adjust to the changes that happened in their lives is very refreshing and realistic. This is a 6 season-long show.
