As James Gunn says that the DC Universe will reboot the Man of Steel with a younger incarnation, Henry Cavill is officially done as Superman.
James Gunn intends to introduce a younger Clark Kent, so Henry Cavill is no longer Superman for the DC Universe. Henry Cavill made a surprise appearance in the post-credits scene of Black Adam, confirming his presence in the DC shared universe for the first time in years. This was further supported by Henry Cavill’s public declaration on Instagram that he was returning as the DCU’s Superman at the same time as Man of Steel 2 was reportedly in the works.

After James Gunn and Peter Safran were made co-CEOs of DC Studios, Henry Cavill’s standing as Superman altered, and the actor and co-CEO have officially stated that Cavill will no longer play Superman in the DC Universe. The DCU will recast the character of Superman and transfer the spotlight to a younger Superman, as Gunn confirmed on his social media accounts. The announcement was also announced on Henry Cavill’s Instagram. According to THR, Gunn is penning the script for the upcoming Superman film, which will reportedly follow Clark Kent as a reporter for the Daily Planet. See both Gunn’s and Cavill’s posts below:
Why Henry Cavill Won’t Be Playing Superman in Gunn’s DC Universe
Nearly ten years after his first appearance, Henry Cavill will not be returning as Superman in the DC Extended Universe. While Henry Cavill’s Superman has a large following, this depiction of the Man of Steel that Zack Snyder introduced did not please everyone. As a result, he established himself as a contentious figure in the DC Extended Universe. This was part of the reason it took Warner Bros. so long to find out how to exploit Superman and win back the hearts and minds of the general public. Given those factors, it may not come as a massive surprise that Gunn and Safran want a new beginning.

The declaration that Henry Cavill will no longer be Superman comes at an unexpected time, though. Black Adam’s post-credits scene only a few months ago seemed to usher in a new era for Henry Cavill’s DC future. That was under a different DC administration, and Gunn obviously has fresh ideas on how to bring Superman into the DCU. It is also noteworthy that before this declaration, rumors broke about Jason Momoa’s likely departure from the role of Aquaman, the cancellation of Wonder Woman 3, and other events. Each time, it seems that Gunn’s DC Universe is trying to set itself off from the Snyderverse.
What the Superman reboot by James Gunn Means for DC’s Future
James Gunn’s aspirations for the future of DC are evident in his decision to reboot Superman for DCU. Gunn is guaranteeing that Superman may be in his prime and be a focal point for years to come by returning to a younger version of the hero. It does suggest that James Gunn’s ultimate objective might be to reboot the DC Universe. Although Cavill’s return to DC was hinted at by the co-CEO, the actor’s Instagram post completely dispels any possibility of it. He writes, “My moment to wear the cape has passed.” As a result, the DCU’s future may involve Henry Cavill switching roles and seeing a new performer take on the role of Superman.
