Who was Salladhor Saan in Game of Thrones?
Salladhor Saan’s appearance in earlier seasons was amazing and for a justified time frame. He barely had a role to play in Season 4. He is a wild pirate and because he owned a fleet of 30 ships, he was approachable for mercenary tasks against a reward. As a pirate, he used to target ships commuting between Westeros and the Free Cities. He would target those ships for gold and wealth.
A Brief Recap of the Story
In-Game of Thrones season 1, Doreah while pleasing Viserys recalled Salladhor as a pirate shielded with gold. In season 4, Davos addressed Salladhor to grab the king’s landing as Stannis’ plan. Davos assured Salladhor that it will make him rich and famous but Salladhor had his eyes on Cersei Lannister. Though, Salladhor had no trust in Davos’ words, he agreed to help him.
After the Battle of Black Water came to an end in season 3, Salladhor ditched Davos and refused to execute the plan to take hold of the king’s landing. Salladhor rescued Davos from The Battle of Black Water and extended him hospitality. Salladhor is still unwilling to help Davos reach Drgaonstone. He deterred Davos from killing the red priestess Melisandre. Because he knew how cruel she was and that she never spared anyone who spoke against her, since The Battle of Black Water. As to her belief, anyone who is against her is a servant of darkness.
Salladhor Saan’s Character in season 4
In season 4, Salladhor returned to Bravos after his failed attempt to exploit the coasts of Westeros and there he met Davos. Later, Davos offered a bag of gold to Salladhor and both sailed for Castle Black. Salladhor was nowhere to be found in the after story. He magically disappeared from the story.
Many of us believed that Salladhor would reappear in the later series of Game of thrones. But to our surprise, he never appeared in later seasons of the GOT. Being an infamous pirate, he could have been introduced in the later seasons thereby adding more flavor to the story. It appeared to us that he was more like a guest in the story and had no major role to play. His character’s charisma had a major role to play but it wasn’t fully extracted.
None of us can predict what happened to Salladhor after he left for Castle Black with Davos. On the other hand, according to the books by George R.R Martin, based on which the show is made, Salladhor had left Stannis at Castle Black but didn’t wait for his payment as he was frustrated and thereafter he dropped Davos to another location and went back to live his life of an infamous pirate.
