Supergirl and Captain Marvel

DC and MARVEL: Who’s copying who?

Did you notice? Supergirl and Captain Marvel have the same last name. Marvel and DC superheroes have some salient alikeness between them. One reason can be that the publishers might have taken inspiration from one another and the other reason can be that writers have shifted between the companies and they have been telling alike stories.

Similarities between Supergirl and Captain Marvel

It’s quite easy to notice the similarities between Supergirl and Captain Marvel. They are the male characters’ female version. Supergirl is the female version of superman whereas Carol Danvers initially dressed up as Ms. Marvel, in respect of the Kree superhero who first had the name, Captain Marvel. Both Supergirl and Captain Marvel are gorgeous blonde superheroines. Not only this but their powersets are similar as well. Although Carol Danvers is now popularly known as an energy manipulator, earlier she was exactly like Supergirl- A physical powerhouse. Now the question is – both these amazing superheroines having the same surname, is it a coincidence? Both carry the same surname- Danvers. Captain Marvel’s full name is Carol Danvers and Supergirl’s real full name is Kara Danvers.

Similarities between Supergirl and Captain Marvel

As startling as it sounds, them having the same surnames looks like a coincidence. Before Supergirl originally took the name – Linda Lee, she was instituted as the Kryptonian Kara Zor-El in 1959. She was then adopted by the Family of Danvers in 1961 and therefore she got her surname “Danvers” from them. After 6 years, Carol Danvers was created by Roy Thomas for Marvel Comics. What was different this time was that Carol Danvers never superhero and at this point, she had no similarities to Supergirl. Carol Danvers was rather a United States Air Force officer. She was also a security head at a place that was Male Captain Marvel’s primary love- Military Base. Roy Thomas has always said that while naming her, he never thought of Supergirl.

Spider-Woman and She-Hulk

Spiderwoman and She Hulk

Until 1977, Carol Danvers wasn’t reconstructed into Ms. Marvel. It happened when Gerry Conway revised her as acquiring super-powers after an alien device called Psyche-Magnetron exploded. At that time, there was quite a demand to have female equivalents of the famous male superheroes. Therefore, Marvel writers were pushed to produce female superheroes to avoid endangering their trademark. It was in 1977 when the first Spider-Woman was produced and thereafter She-Hulk was produced in 1980. So, there are no major possibilities that Supergirl influenced Marvel’s writers to make something like that, as Supergirl had lost all her popularity back then.

So, by this, we have concluded that both Supergirl and Captain Marvel having the same last name is merely a coincidence.
