Today we are going to talking about one of the most powerful character, Beerus in the Dragon Ball franchise. And how he turned from a necessary opponent to a side character affecting the series.
Before moving on, a spoiler warning is now in effect as we will be discussing things from the Dragon Ball franchise. Specifically, Dragon Ball Resurrection F and Dragon Ball Z Battle of Gods. Now that you have been warned let’s talk about Beerus, The Problem Character.
First introduced in the movie Battle of Gods, Beerus was the main opponent not a villain for Goku and his friends. Introduced as a really powerful character, Beerus gave the message to the whole franchise that there is always going to someone stronger than you. What was so much loved about the movie that even if he was not a villain, he pushed Goku further his limits?
Through sheer power he made the whole fanbase realize what the franchise was about. Achieving greater power through hard work and determination which seem to be forgotten by the writers and the fans. He was not just powerful; he was sensitive and funny too. But what happened after that you ask? Well, let me take you through it.
Second Age Movie Faces Problems
In the Second new age movie of the franchise, Resurrection F. The attributes we talked about became the problems for the God of Destruction. He provides the biggest problems that the franchise never faced once. A loss of tension. The whole franchise is known to provide countless nail-biting moments, where we the audience just thinks that whether our heroes would be able to get out of it or not. And one way to break that scenario is through Beerus in Dragon ball.
His sheer presence breaks all the tension of the scene. Like at the time when Goku was fighting Golden Frieza, who is proving far stronger than him. Beerus takes the camera and breaks all attention. Showing him between a strong fight takes away the reason for the fight by telling that there is already a far stronger character than the ones fighting is present there.
And the humor he had at the time of Battle of Gods, feels repetitive and boring. As they are different jokes with the same base. And as with these movies, he took the tension out of every major fight he is in. I am not talking about the tournament of power.
In Conclusion for me, he became a big problem character. He went from the character who provided the most tension in a fight to a problem character who took all the tension away.
But whatever we say about him, we have to agree that the jokes he cracks are the jokes only a character with a far superior power can enjoy. And whether he takes sides or not we will be always on his side loving for the dangerously powerful hairless cat he is.
