The Oscars took place last Sunday to honor the best accomplishments of the last year in the cinematic world.
Bong’s dark thriller Parasite became the first International Feature Film in the history of 92 years. It also had been considered as the Best Picture. It was for the first time that a non-English Language film had grabbed the prestigious prize.
Parasite won 4 awards for Best Original Screenplay, International Feature Film, best director and the major, Best Picture. The picture had made history for becoming the best South Korean Film to win Oscar for Best International Feature Film. The director thanked his cast and supporters for the same. Getting into the category was a milestone for the picture and for the Korean film industry as well.
It was a triumph for Parasite to take the Oscar with it. “Oscars are very vocal”, Bong said mentioning the diversity of the academy. The picture had presented socio-economic themes that make it best in itself.
Brad Pitt for being the Supporting Actor for Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, Joaquin Phoenix For the Lead Actor in Joker, Reneé Zellweger for the Lead Actress in Judy had taken back home Oscars along with them. Laura Dern had won in the category of Supporting Actress for Marriage Story.
Joker was the most nominated film that won two awards under the category of Original Score and Joaquin Phoenix for the Lead Actor.
1917 had won three out of ten nominated categories and they were: Cinematography, Visual Effects, and Sound Mixing. Netflix released The Irishman and Marriage Story whereas Sony released Little Women and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Most of the Best Picture contenders were released by big studios, where Parasite had played as an underdog. 1917, World War 1 drama that had been shot in two separate long takes. had won the Golden Globe for Drama along with the earlier mentioned categories. It won the prizes but only for technical categories, maybe because it talked about the past and the Parasite talked about the present times.
The evening opened with Chris Rock and Steve Martin. There were jokes that were mostly focusing on Martin’s age. They both dug the academy for not having any women directors in any nominated categories. Later, it was Brie Larson, Gal Godot and Sigourney Weaver who had made this important to recognize strong women around everybody.
Weaver said, “We just want to stand here together and say all women are superheroes”.
Things were not in favor of Cats, it was only remembered for marking the importance of good visual effects.
Eminem won an Oscar long back in 2003. He won another after 17 years. He entered the stage with a powerful performance. He left the stage and was graced with a standing ovation.
The nominated categories and lists were not surprising and had not reflected any diversity. Only one American director won the best director prize for La La Land in 2017. The other nine out of ten had won by a British director, Tom Hooper for The King’s Speech, a French director, Michel Hazanavicius for The Artist, a Taiwanese director Ang Lee for The Life of Pi, three Mexican directors Alfonso Guardian for Gravity and Roma, Alejandro G for Birdman and The Revenant, Guillermo del Toro for The Shape Of Problem. and this time a Korean director for Parasite. It is the first decade that so many non-English Directors had been paid for what they had worked hard.
