The series starring Josh Charles and Hilary Swank focusses on astronaut Emma Green. She embarks on a dangerous mission to Mars with an international crew. She leaves her husband and daughter behind.
Each episode sees different characters into focus. It explores the reasons behind their involvement and their temperaments aboard the ship.
The finale of Away sees a gang landing on Mars, which Away Creator Andrew Hinderaker says was planned. Hinderaker told Collider, “The day one idea from the pitch of the show was that it would begin with Emma looking back at Earth from the moon and ending with her looking back at Earth from Mars”. “That’s just so much of [what] the show is about.”

He explained that he and Goldberg were to design the journey which took off to Mars back in 2018. When it landed successfully it was actually “so exciting and so moving.”
Away Creator Andrew Hinderaker said further, “They’re watching their life’s work either go up in flames or slam onto another planet”. “We all burst into cheers and then one of our writers turned to us and said, ‘Imagine now that there had been people on it.’ So it felt like that’s what we wanted to build to.”
“In terms of Season 2, I always felt like if there was a final card that I would love to have on the season, it would be ‘Away will return for Season 2… on Mars,’ Hinderaker added. “Part of what we’re promising is what that crew experiences at the very end, we now get to live in a new world.”
