Batman is an overly suspicious guy but his fear of surveillance tech in Gotham’s near future is one that can’t be ignored even though he himself has used it.
Batman is a big overthinker, some would even say he is paranoid, however, his fear of surveillance tech in Gotham’s near future is one that can’t be ignored. Undoubtedly, Batman is one of DC Comic’s most high-tech heroes. However, he is seen fighting against the technology used by the Magistrate for spying on the people of his beloved city Gotham. Bruce is doing his best as a bones vigilante in terms of both equipment and sensibilities, to beat the Fascist forces of the Magistrate while being on the run.
While the Bat-Family and the rest of the citizens of Gotham presume The Dark Knight to be dead, Bruce confronts a whole lot of new problems to deal with, most of which have aroused as a result of the Magistrate’s absolute authority, all while investigating the attempted assassination on himself. And while he has been known to use similar surveillance tech in the past, this near-future presents a familiar problem that Batman seems keen on not repeating. Batman believes that he alone can deal with his new foe, but he is unaware of the great evil that the Magistrate is capable of and the extent he would go on to in order to ensure his total control over Gotham.
Batman Discovers The Shocking Truth
Future State: Dark Detective by Mariko Tamaki and Dan Mora depicts Batman hiding in an apartment rented from a normal guy believing that it would be overlooked under ordinary circumstances. Bruce tries to fulfill his nightly commitment as Batman by hunting down and taking out as much Magistrate tech as he can, all while trying to stay off the grid and out of sight. Batman hopes to understand how big of an enemy he’s dealing with when he managed to capture a drone for investigation.
He fears that the Magistrate is secretly violating the Privacy of Gotham’s citizens, but to his shock, he finds that the Magistrate is using these Micro- Surveillance bots not just for patrolling, but for spying on Gotham’s citizens even when they are inside their homes, “blowing past an invasion of privacy to full panopticon.”
Learning From Past Mistakes
Batman is fully aware of what can be the consequences of using this kind of surveillance considering he once lost control of an A.I. called Brother Eye, which was created in order to monitor Earth’s Superheroes and keep them in check.
As the Magistrate tries to advance in the direction of increasing his surveillance, Batman tries to put a stop to his schemes so as to stop the past from repeating itself. Batman might not be the hero he once was, but he’s allowing his past mistakes, fears, and concerns to guide him in a way that the Magistrate clearly isn’t. Judging by the leveling up of their surveillance, they might not be too far behind repeating the sins of a hero that was just trying to help.
