Scarlett Johansson aka Black Widow finally got her very own solo movie and fans are very thrilled and absolutely excited about it.
Natasha Romanoff (aka Black Widow) played by Scarlett Johansson who is also the first original female avenger finally after a long wait and a great deal of special appearances in various Marvel Cinematic Universe movies is getting her first ‘front and center’ movie and it released today in theaters and on Disney + Hotstar too. After a great deal of struggle and doing all that she could – kicks, flips, fights, and a little bit of fling too, Scarlett totally deserved this and fans are absolutely delighted. The first reviews are out and it definitely is a ‘heartwarming family reunion of sisters with some spy thriller sequences too’.
BLACK WIDOW: STORYLINE
The movie starts in Ohio in the 90s when Natasha is a young and brave girl with steering eyes, living and taking care of her sister Yelena (aka Florence Pugh). Her parents, “Melina (Rachel Weisz) and Alexei (David Harbour)” are spies too and acting to be a married couple with whom she lived before joining the ‘Red Room’. Natasha, who started her training at the ‘Red Room’ which is basically an institution for producing spies and deadly agents and is a secret ‘Soviet’ camp.
The main focus of the movie is on the timeline of “Captain America: Civil War” where Natasha is a refugee and is deserted from the rest of the ‘Avengers’ group. As far as the timeline is considered, Marvel is definitely converting into a pro in terms of going back a few movies (I mean, come on we are even past ‘Endgame’) and this one also likes “Loki” is basically now providing the actors with their due.
Natasha finds out that ‘Red Room’ still exists and its main leader ‘Dreykov (aka Ray Winstone)’ is also alive and operating the group. She joins forces with Yelena (and her group) who have also apparently found an antidote for mind control. Also, while in hiding, Natasha is forced through exposition and meets a helmeted assassin called “Mandarin”.
DEVIATED FROM THE ORIGINAL PATH
Despite a fantastic opening scene (trust me you won’t be able to resist yourself and blow whistles and shout like anything) with shootings and bullets and jets, the movie struggles and is displayed as quite unsure of how to proceed forward. In fact, in a lot of ways, Black Widow actually doesn’t feel like a ‘Marvel Movie’. It seems like more of a “BOND” movie and less of an “AVENGER” movie. Natasha, although has done complete justice with her character and portrayed some flamboyant and exceptional action sequences it also sometimes feels like she was a bit overshadowed by her younger sister Yelena. Florence Pugh definitely has been able to make a lasting impression on the audience.
Directed by Cate Shortland and scripted by Eric Pearson, the film basically struggles to find out the crux of the story and deeper politics. The association with the character of Natasha is on and off. Maybe because the directorial debutant Cate couldn’t effectively direct her character. Women assassins turned into superheroes and women mad scientists too, the movie tries to show the strength and power of women but is deviated from this path. By the end of it all, it very much feels like Black Widow and MCU is just self-satisfied with their protagonist plot.
After such a long wait, fans certainly expected more but it definitely is worth watching and of course “SCARLETT JOHANSSON ONSCREEN IS A MUST – IN ANY FORM”.
