After becoming the most-watched series on Netflix, with a viewership of 82 million households. The creators of Bridgerton confirmed its season 2 in January 2021. Bridgerton, a Netflix’s period drama series created by Chris Van Dusen and produced by Shonda Rhimes, based on best-selling author Julia Quinn’s novel Bridgerton. The racy, sumptuous Regency-set Bridgerton, Rhimes’s first new scripted series secured her a tremendous deal with Netflix, had us hooked.
The drama takes place in Regency-era London in 1813, centering on the aristocratic Bridgerton family. Here, eight close-knit siblings of the powerful Bridgerton family attempt to find love. The first season is predominantly about Simon Bassett, the Duke of Hasting (Regé-Jean Page), and the fourth Bridgerton sibling, Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) who initially fake courtship and its later works as a love-charm conquering all odds. Duke is portrayed as a debonair, masculine, and doting companion of Daphne. The result is an enjoyable bit of reverie that nonetheless manages to feel special and considerable.
Since the Lady Whistledown and mysterious buzzing bee in the season 1 finale left fans eagerly waiting for season 2. So, prepare for another season. And here’s every little thing you should know about Bridgerton season 2.
Netflix confirmed Bridgerton season 2 on this date
On January 21, 2021, Netflix confirmed the Bridgerton season 2. The news was announced via an image of Lady Whistledown’s Society Papers, stating that “The incomparable cast of Bridgerton will return to production in the Spring of 2021,” the letter explained. “This author happens to be reliably informed that Lord Anthony Bridgerton is expected to take over the season. I’ll have my pen willing to report on all of his romantic activities.”
Daphine (played by Phoebe Dynevor), on the other hand, will return and will be there to help her oldest brother.
Netflix also renewed Bridgerton for seasons 3 and 4 on April 13, 2021, with executive producer Shonda Rhimes. In which the series is expected to further follow the lives of all eight children, including Hyacinth. Also, Vanity Fair, On April 13, 2021, confirmed the new season started filming around the week.
Lord Anthony Bridgerton and his new love interest
Julia Quinn’s series of romance novels on which the show is based is book series of eight novels, each focusing on one of the Bridgerton offspring. Just as season 1 is dedicated to Daphne and Simon, season 2 will revolve around Anthony’s search for love. Season one only covers the first novel: The Duke and I. Now we’ll be moving on to the second novel, The Viscount Who Loved Me, which focuses on Anthony Bridgerton and a new heroine called Kate Sheffield (renamed Kate Sharma in the TV show).
Simone Ashley will star as Anthony’s love interest
Netflix announcement reads. “Get ready to fall in love with Simone Ashley…” As the news broke, On February 15, that actress Simone Ashley will star as Kate Sharma and Charithra Chandran as Edwina Sharma her younger half-sister of Kate Sharma. Both will play a significant role in Anthony’s storyline. Netflix further added, “Kate is a smart, headstrong young woman who suffers no fools—Anthony Bridgerton very much included.” Simone Ashley, the 25-year-old is recognized from another popular Netflix show, Sex Education,where she plays a character named Olivia. Regé-Jean Page will not return for Bridgerton season 2
Unfortunately, Regé-Jean Page, who played the role of the Duke of Hastings, will not be in season 2. However, his character will be mentioned on the show. The announcement was made through a “note” from Lady Whistledown, which read:
“Dear Readers, while all eyes turn to Lord Anthony Bridgerton’s quest to find a Viscountess, we bid adieu to Regé-Jean Page, who so triumphantly played the Duke of Hastings. We’ll miss Simon’s presence onscreen, but he will always be a part of the Bridgerton family,”
In an interview with Variety, Page explained why he appreciated the single-season commitment for Bridgerton: “It’s a one-season arc. It’s going to have a beginning, middle, end—give us a year,” he explained. “…It felt like a limited series. I get to come in, I get to contribute my bit, and then the Bridgerton family rolls on.” He also mentioned his excitement for the coming seasons and posted a tribute to his time on the show on his Instagram.
New cast joining Bridgerton Season 2
Some more new characters were announced on April 5, including Lady Mary Sharma (Shelley Conn), Theo Sharpe (Calam Lynch), and Jack (Rupert Young). Lady Mary Sharma will be seen as Kate’s stepmother, while Jack is reportedly a new character who isn’t from the books.Meanwhile, Calam Lynch (Derry women) will play Theo Sharpe, as working-class printer’s assistant, an intellectual who battles for the liberties of many.
Rupert Young, on the other hand, will take a turn as Jack, an aristocrat who’s newly arrived in London and has connections to some of its most prominent families. And the most fascinating thing is that he might have some link to Bridgerton’s mystery. Intriguing!! Isn’t it?
What about rest of the cast?
As the filming of season 2 is underway, the cast is as excited as we are. Phoebe Dynevor told T&C of how excited and willing she is to pass this torch to her brother Anthony saying – “I love that [Daphne’s] story ends nicely; it’s all tied up at the end. Now, I have a feeling that she’s going to have to get involved with Anthony’s love life since it’s his turn next.”
And finally, Chris Van Dusen revealed his idea of how we’ll get not just a second season of Bridgerton, but seven more installments: one to cover each of the Bridgerton children’s stories. And when asked he also showed his willingness to adapt all eight of Quinn’s novels for the screen. As returning cast members are expressing their excitement to return to the world of Bridgerton on social media, we just can’t wait and go back to binge on Bridgerton once again.
