Bonded by bourbon and brotherhood, Alaric Saltzman and Damon Salvatore turned to be one of the most beautiful bonds to be seen on The Vampire Diaries.
Through all the 8 eights, their bond grew multi-folds and what started as ‘being enemies’ turned out to be something quite the contrary. DAMON SALVATORE (one of the two Salvatore brothers) is in every way unlike his brother – charming, witty, one with deep dark impulse and who is a VAMPIRE too and is certainly not the better one of the two brothers. Despite all this, his good looks and killer instincts are loved by fans. Being friends with someone like him feels impossible at the first instant, but ALARIC SALTZMAN proved it to be true. Brought together by circumstances, choice, or shared enemies, the two shared a bond that’s hard to miss out on.
Here are some of the instances when DAMON and ALARIC actually showed us what friendship means.
DAMON WARNS ALARIC ABOUT ‘MEREDITH FELL’
When the town’s doctor turns up dead with a stake through his heart, Damon becomes suspicious about ‘Meredith Fell’. Though she also happened to be Alaric’s love interest, Damon only finds it reasonable to question her in season 3’s “The Ties That Bind”. Damon’s concern that Alaric’s choice of women he wants himself to romantically connect with is shocking and so UNLIKE DAMON. This also shows that Damon can care about people when he wants to. Though Alaric didn’t ask for his help, the mere fact that he was concerned about him is very surprising.
STAYS WITH ALARIC WHEN HE WAS ABOUT TO DIE
As always, Vampire Diaries never disappoints when it comes to twisting the plot. When Esther was trying to turn Alaric into MIKAEL 2.0, her plan was sabotaged by Alaric himself. That certainly meant it was a dead-end for Alaric in season 3’s “DO NOT GO GENTLE”. That’s when we see the “friend Damon” when he decides to stay with Alaric till the end. It’s not a hidden fact that Damon isn’t the sentimental type so it’s mostly ‘Bourbon and Joke’ but he does offer an official apology for killing Alaric (twice).
GOES ON A TRIP WITH ALARIC TO EUROPE
Following Alaric’s wedding day massacre which resulted in Jo’s death, Damon takes Alaric on a trip to EUROPE (Well, actually it was a drinking trip). After seeing his ‘soon to be wife’ eviscerated by her psycho twin ‘KAI’ and most of the guests being dead too, it was Damon who came to Alaric’s rescue and keeps him together. It’s a first to see Damon putting his energy into something other than Elena and not wondering about when they’ll be reunited. He makes Alaric a priority and is by his side as much as he can.
DAMON BRINGS ALARIC BACK FROM THE ‘OTHER SIDE’
In the finale episode “HOME” of season 5, when the Other Side starts collapsing, it’s up to Damon to save people that he loves and though Alaric isn’t at the top of his list, he saves him. The guys have each other’s back (just like the old times) and it’s Bonnie who pushes Alaric through first. He gives Alaric the greatest gift ever – a normal human life.
