Conan the Barbarian: Battle for the Serpent Crown has brought back its titular sword. This has happened with an old school Avengers villain who has not been seen in the scene for two decades.
Conan the Barbarian, Conan becomes more entwined with Marvel Universe with each issue in the miniseries. The latest issue has intertwined him with the vague Avengers villain Imus the Champion, as well as eventually spotting him face to face with the Serpent Crown.
Imus first occurred in Steve Englehart and Don Heck’s Avengers #109 as a master businessman who wasn’t convinced with the prosperity that he had. As a result, Imus whirled his awareness of developing skills and rare souvenirs to strengthen his status.
After understanding archery from Hawkeye, it took the Avengers to deter his plan to employ his newfound abilities in an attempt to initiate bombs to sink California. He would later come to be an opponent of the Squadron Supreme. He has planned numerous schemes to get the two super-teams to eradicate one another. His last endeavor was halted when he was overthrown by Giant-Man and imprisoned. After that, he receded into ambiguity before returning to the Marvel Universe.
The Serpent Crown has demonstrated a much more crucial facet of Marvel lore. Created by Roy Thomas and Marie Severin in Sub-Mariner #9 (1969), the myth of the Crown was complicated. In its first official manifestation, the Crown is taken to Atlantis by Namor and there it is disclosed as the Serpent Crown. From there it’s the relationship to Marvel’s version of the god is organized.
The Crown curbs the power of Set and enriches the wearer with many proficiencies. Unfortunately, that ability is only helpful for a short time as Set’s impact bends the wearer’s sensitivity to his will.
A few questions later the Crown was believed to have been eradicated after plunging into a chasm. However, the Crown would return as equipment largely used by the Roxxon Corporation. It would plunge to the Avengers to halt those wearing the crown in each event. These stories would also inaugurate the concept of numerous versions of the crown further confounding the myth of the Crown.
Conan the Barbarian In Inspection of the Crown
The readers of Conan the Barbarian: Battle for the Serpent Crown are interested only with the original Crown and its strength of mental supremacy. This latest issue indicates that Mephisto wishes the crown in order to incorporate it with the energy of the Serpent Scepter, an ancient relic built to open the strength of the crown in a way that would conserve the wearer from Set’s custody.
Using the communal might of the twin artifacts, Mephisto schedules to absolve himself from his custody in Hotel Inferno. Unable to vacate his cell, he persuades the aid of Imus the Champion, promising to educate him how a mortal can regulate the combined strength of the Staff and Crown without being eradicated by them.
Conan the Barbarian is in the inquiry of the Crown as well to organize a province of his own, and he arrives at blows with both Imus and Namor in an endeavor to retain the Crown. The battle is worthless as Imus has already won against the heroes to the Crown and uses its strength to subject all those current to the Crown’s power.
With his past of scanning for rare artifacts and honing new skills, it would appear that this is precisely what Imus has expanded his life searching for. On the other hand, the intelligent Champion might outwit Mephisto, as he has experience planning against those much more influential than himself. In either case, it will plunge Conan to stop the villain from completely retaining the power of the Serpent Crown.
