Dune will be directed by Denis Villeneuve. It is being said that the movie will get released in December 2020. Fans are waiting for the film to hit the theatres so they can witness another sci-fi film. The screenplay is expected to be written by Eric Roth and Jon Spaiths. It is going to be under international co-production between the US, UK, Canada, and Hungary.
Dune, the novel
The plot of the film will be based on the novel of the same name that has been written by 1965. The novel deals with Paul, the protagonist of the novel, who goes along with his father Duke Leto, and mother Jessica to Arrakis as his father has been appointed as the new governor of Arrakis. Arrakis is the island where human beings have colonized the island. The climate of the island is hostile where there is no available water. And people have to wear fitting clothes so the moisture gets developed and they can use it by recycling it for drinking purposes.
Paul, while going to Arrakis realizes a trap is being woven for Leto’s death. Paul decides to save Arrakis and his father. But unfortunately, his father dies because of an attempt to kill Baron, (villain) the head of Harkonnens.
Arrakis is known for spice (melange) cultivation, where spice mining is dangerous because the noise of the mines invites uninvited giant sandworms.
As Leto dies, Jessica and Paul, together, decide to save Arrakis and Fremen, people of Arrakis from Baron and Harkonnens. Jessica is a member of Bene Gesserit, a school of quasi-mystical witches so she has special powers. And Paul can foresee the future because of the consumption of melange.
Dr. Yeus considers them both as their leaders because of their special powers.
After years, Paul becomes more powerful and on the other hand, Baron gives his place to his nephew Feyd Rautha. Paul now has a child with one of the Freman’s daughters and Jessica, on the other hand, has given birth to Alia. When the fight starts between two groups, Alia kills Barron and Paul kills Feyd Rautha and becomes the new Emperor. Ultimately, Paul loses his child during the raid.
The cast for the 2020 ‘Dune’ and comparison with Mad Max
It is confirmed by the director, Denis Villeneuve that Timotheé Chalamet will be playing the lead role of Paul and Oscar Issac will be playing the role of Leto. Rebecca Ferguson will be seen playing Jessica.
The movie is comparatively the same as Mad Max that is based on after civilization has collapsed. People of the desert have to survive in the wasteland.
During an interview with Vanity Fair, he also declares that the movie will be filmed in 2 parts.
Dune (1984) by David Lynch
There had been an adaptation of the novel in 1984 as well. The movie was directed by David Lynch and critics did not really like the film. Roger Ebert had criticized by calling the movie “a real mess, an incomprehensible, ugly, unstructured, pointless execution into the murkier realms of one of the most confusing screenplays of the time.”
Now what comes to mind is, if the movie will get enough attention from critics unlike the 1st film by David Lynch?
Maybe Denis Villeneuve can do justice and provide something good to the fans by adding some ‘spice’ to the story.
Will there be another part if the 1st part will not be accepted by the critics? Will Timotheé do justice to the role of Paul? Because we are assuming the story does not really have a strong backbone.
