The physical transformation of Fat Thor’s (Chris Hemsworth) in Avengers: Endgame was already hinted at the beginning of the movie.
Fat Thor, The superheroes who were left at the end of Thanos killing half of the population of the universe in Avengers: Infinity War were devastated. They could not even believe their eyes. They couldn’t protect the Universe and, they had some huge personal losses when they fought against Mad Titan. the most miserable superhero out of them all was God of Thunder.
Every hero tried to move on in their unique ways. Like Black Widow (Scarlet Johansson) kept herself busy at Avengers HQ, Captain America (Chris Evans) moved on in his life, Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) brought Hulk back to life, and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) started focusing on his family life. However, Fat Thor couldn’t get all that failure out of his mind. He was devastated internally. Thor let go of his throne of Asgard. He had spent 5 long years all by himself and, therefore, had gained so much weight that when all the Avengers re-assembled no one could recognize him.
Fat Thor was devastated since Thor: Ragnarok
Thor was struggling since Thor: Ragnarok. He had been struggling to get terms with reality. It was hard for him to swallow the hard truth that Black Order and Thanos would murder half of the population that too in front of him. He was breaking from the inside because he couldn’t save all those people who lost their lives. He could have used hi snap and ended it all then and there but he didn’t. He wanted to relish upon the villain. He realized it all when it all had happened. And they could not even go back and rectify all of it since all the Infinity Stones had gone to dust.
While many were shocked regarding God of Thunder’s transformation but Endgame had already given a clue in the beginning. After Iron Man’s devastating speech regarding how Captain America didn’t believe him when he said that they should take all necessary steps for an extra_terrestrial attack.
What did Thor take to cope up with his depression?
Fat Thor sat in one corner while other superheroes discussed what was the need of the hour. Also, he had a bowl of bread to munch on all by himself to keep him sane. Thor believed that there was a way to get things back to normalcy. He in his heart believed that he could defeat Thanos.
Unfortunately, Fat Thor in Avengers: Endgame was not welcomed by many. Many believed it was a very insensitive gesture towards anyone suffering from depression and weight issues. It is interesting to see if we have the present physical state in Thor: Love and Thunder also.
