Brianne Howey’s experience with Ginny & Georgia
Growing up with a single mother and having a sister 15 years younger than her, really helped her to understand the role of a single mother that she portrays in the show. Brianne Howey added, “a lot of those dynamics in the show, in these relationships, were already built-in for me” She claimed to draw inspiration and empathy from her own life experiences and her family.
The story of Ginny & Georgia revolves around a 30-year-old, single mother Georgia(Howey) and her 15-year-old daughter Ginny(Antonio Gentry), and her 9-year-old son Austin( Diesel La Torraca) and their daily struggles in the new town. Although the plot of Ginny & Georgia may seem very common on the surface level the avid viewers of the show will claim that the show tackles issues relating to mental health, self-harm, abuse, and growing up in a bi-racial family.
Although playing the character of Georgia, the 30-year-old mother, it was Ginny’s character that resonated the most with Howey. While recalling a scene from the show where Georgia catches one of Ginny’s lovers climbing up the window she says, “ I may or may not have utilized the window outside of my bedroom also in high school” she jokingly added, “I just thought ,’I can’t believe how the tables have turned.’”
Howey also claimed that playing a mother excited her for when in the future she plans to become one in her real life. Georgia’s character has many shades, the most remarkable among them are the times when she traded into the darker side of her personality, clawing her way to the top. But Howey personally liked playing the scenes which featured her fictional kids- Ginny and Austin.
On being compared to the Gilmore Girls by fans Howey claimed, “Though there is a healthy amount of fast talking and mother- daughter dynamics, it’s certainly not Gilmore girls.” Howey also praises the show runner (Debra J. Fisher) and the show’s creator (Sarah Lampert) from not shying away and showing how race has affected Ginny, who is bi-racial and her mother Georgia, who is white.
Will there be a Ginny & Georgia Season 2?
Although the second season of Ginny & Georgia has not yet been announced by Netflix, Howey has ideas about Georgia’s future. The first season ended with a cliffhanger, while on one side Georgie is seen celebrating her win, as she escapes the prying eyes of a private investigator and gets engaged to the re-elected mayor Paul Randolph(Scott Porter), on the other side we see her kids running away from Willsbury on a motorcycle.
Brianne Howey has said that Georgia’s kids will always be the first priority for her but when it comes to romance she has “ I think, first and foremost, (Georgia)’s always got a plan. She knows what she’s doing…she’s playing a game with people who don’t even know that they’re a part of a game. So I think, for now, Georgia is leading with her mind, not her heart. “
