Taylor Swift called out Netflix and its show Ginny & Georgia for a “deeply sexist joke” made at her expense.
The series Ginny & Georgia is about a teenager and her young mom which released on Netflix in late February. In one of the episodes, a character comments, “What do you care? You go through men faster than Taylor Swift”. The dialogue pissed off the fans and they trended “RESPECT TAYLOR SWIFT” on Twitter. Fans also pointed out a comment from Degrassi: Next class saying “Taylor Swift made an entire career off of her exes”.
Swift took aim in particular at the newest series. “Hey Ginny & Georgia, 2010 called and it wants its lazy, deeply sexist joke back,” she tweeted on Monday morning with the same viral screengrab fans had been sharing.
“How about we stop degrading hard-working women by defining this horse shit as FuNnY.” Swift previously partnered with Netflix for the release of two specials: her 2018 Reputation concert special and the 2020 documentary Miss Americana. Her tweet pointed out their history as well. “Also, @netflix after Miss Americana this outfit doesn’t look cute on you. Happy Women’s History Month I guess.”

The line incurred the wrath of Swift’s fans, prompting criticism of the show and its cast members on social media. Some Swift fans even called for a boycott of the series.
One thing is certain: Those who weren’t aware of “Ginny & Georgia,” which Netflix has rated No. 1 in the U.S., certainly have it on their radar now because of Swift. The 10-episode series premiered Wednesday and has been compared to “Gilmore Girls” for its banter and cultural criticism. It’s also been reviewed as “Degrassi dipped in acid”. The campaign started trending again Monday after Swift criticized the series. Lady Gaga and Lana Del Rey fans also took to Twitter to blast the series for jokes it made about those singers. Netflix has not yet commented on the criticism, nor has anyone associated with Ginny and Georgia.
Swift’s love life has long been in the media spotlight. In Monday’s tweet, Swift also referenced her documentary Miss Americana, which was released on Netflix in January 2020. Covering several turbulent years during her career, the documentary revealed intimate details of Swift’s life, exploring how her relationships had been dissected by the public and press.
