Following the actor’s comeback in the Black Adam post-credits scene, Dwayne Johnson makes a comment regarding Henry Cavill leaving the DC Universe as Superman.
With Henry Cavill’s comeback for the Black Adam post-credits scene, Dwayne Johnson finally offers his thoughts on the actor’s departure from the DC film franchise as Superman. Although he also made an appearance in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which was released in 2021, Cavill returned to the role of Clark Kent aka Superman in Black Adam for the first time since 2017’s Justice League. Cavill did, however, announce his departure from the franchise less than three months after Black Adam entered theatres and the actor promised to return as Superman.
Johnson was asked about Cavill’s exit as Superman on the Oscars red carpet. The Black Adam actor, who had been silent on Cavill’s exit, now speaks out against Superman being replaced in the future DC Universe in an interview with Variety.
He compared the current situation to a football team that has new management take over and chooses to fire the head coach and the starting quarterback. On Cavill’s departure as Superman, read his entire quote below.
All that I could do, and that we could do, when we were making Black Adam was put our best foot forward, surround ourselves with the best people and then also deliver the best movie we could. Our audience score was in the 90s, critics took a couple a shots—that’s just the business of it though. But I think it’s almost like when you have a pro-football team and your quarterback wins championships, the head coach wins championships and then you have a new owner. And a new owner comes in and says, ‘not my coach, not my quarterback. I’m gonna go with somebody new.’
Why Henry Cavill Is Not Superman Anymore
Johnson’s parallel is essentially what occurred with DC. Warner Bros. Discovery established DC Studios shortly after Black Adam reached theatres, and James Gunn and Peter Safran were given the reins of the DC Universe property. A younger Clark Kent is the focus of the forthcoming Superman film, Superman: Legacy, which is being written by Gunn. There was no room for Cavill’s Superman since DC Entertainment chose to take a different route with the Man of Steel.
Gunn is likely to recruit a fresh actor to play Superman in his film, though casting has not yet formally begun. Uncertain as to who might ultimately take on the role of Superman in the DC Universe, it will undoubtedly be someone younger than Cavill, 39. The release of Superman: Legacy is scheduled for July 2025, thus it might take some time before the next Man of Steel is cast.
For his part, actor Henry Cavill is working on a number of projects, including the Warhammer TV series he is creating for Amazon and the spy film Argylle from director Matthew Vaughn. Furthermore, Cavill and Gunn reportedly discussed a non-Superman DC job, though it’s unclear what possible roles the director has in mind for the former Clark Kent star. It remains to be seen if Cavill will eventually come back to the DC Universe. It’s been a while since I’ve been able to say this, but I’m going to say it anyway: I’m not a fan of the way that the world is going right now. Source: Variety
