The Resident Evils And The Silent Hills
Imagine waking up in a death-trap and seeing a spooky doll on a TV screen in front of saying these words, “I wanna play a game.”How will you respond? Well, try telling him that you would rather watch a movie. Fan-favorite videogame series Resident Evil had its success in the movie department along with a fair share of criticism. In the 6 movie series, it generated $1.233 billion on a cumulative budget of $288 million. The decision to reboot it is a testimony of its success in Hollywood’s pool of horror movies.
Outlast
Found footage horror started with The Blaire Witch Project and then seeped into other movies and finally videogames. Outlast is a fine example how you make found footage games. Why not make an Outlast movie.) With two critically acclaimed games already establishing the tone, its fair to make an Outlast movie. Found Footage horror being extremely low-budget in comparison to other genres, it’s fair to make an Outlast movie.
Meat! Wants meat! Wants meat! Meat!
The Evil Within
In 2017, they already made a movie on the franchise but with a relatively low-budget and the director and writer being a part-time director and writer. It was well received but criticiszed for its unfocused plot lines. Imagine what a relatively higher budget and a James Wan or Robert Eggers or a David Sandberg would do with the property. Unlike Outlast, the aesthetic of The Evil Within in itself requires good CGI and action scenes.
“Oh, father, if you only knew how satisfying that look on your face is.”
The Medium
Released in January 2021, The Medium received generally favorable reviews from the critics. The Medium is a paranormal and psychological horror videogame that focuses on Marianne, a medium who can walk both worlds; our world and the world of the spirits. The concept is somewhat similar to Insidious but if done like the videogame, it can very well surpass the Insidious franchise itself. Imagine running away from a lurking threat that only you can see.
“Those who run from death stood still in life.”
Bioshock
Initially released in 2007, Bioshock is a critically acclaimed game set in a retrofuturistic setting taking characters through various strange places from a city falling apart at the depths of the oceans to the heights of the skies, all while encountering Little Sister and Big Daddy, the obvious horror elements of the game. An R-rated movie based on the franchise was already green-lit in 2009, the project was cancelled due to the low success of Zack Snyder’s Watchmen film. The budget was cut from 200 million dollars to 80 million dollars causing the parties involved to part ways. With today’s technology and the studio going nowhere with Bioshock, it is only fair they give the fanbase their long-awaited movie.
“A man chooses, a slave obeys.”
Bloodborne
Released in 2015, Bloodborne is a Souls-like game drenched in the horrors of Lovecraft. With no news of the long sought sequel to the game, fans deserve a movie on the franchise. The only hurdle is that cosmic horror is the most difficult genre to translate to the big screen and hence, no movie has ever been fully successful in portraying the essence of lovecraftian horrors. Bloodborne has already established the lore of its world with its own take on abyssal horror. With 2004’s VanHelsing vibe combines with games aesthetic, it can become the first movie to successfully be a true heir to the cosmic horror medium.
“A hunter should hunt beasts. Leave the hunting of hunters to me.”
