How Han Survived the Tokyo Drift and Where He’s Been is Revealed by F9

F9 explores the reality behind Han’s purported death in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift and reveals what he has been doing since.

The teased reappearance of Han (Sung Kang), who appeared to be killed off in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, has been a huge enigma surrounding F9 ever since it was first revealed. Fans can now finally find out how Han managed to avoid dying and what his startlingly crucial task was after that.

Although he had previously starred in filmmaker Justin Lin’s earlier and initially unrelated film, Better Luck Tomorrow, Han Lue was first introduced in Tokyo Drift. Han, a street racer from Tokyo, mentored Sean Boswell after he immigrated, and he died in what appeared to be a race-related car crash. The events in Tokyo Drift, however, really took place after Fast & Furious 6, according to the timeline for The Fast & The Furious franchise.

Was Han killed in the Tokyo Drift?

Han served as a member of Dominic Toretto’s (Vin Diesel) crew in Fast & Furious, Fast Five, and Fast & Furious 6, participating in several heists and falling in love with fellow crew member Gisele (Gal Gadot). In Fast & Furious 6, Toretto re-engaged the crew, who were key to the defeat of Owen Shaw (Luke Evans) and an amnesic Letty (Michelle Rodriguez). Gisele, though, was defeated in the climactic combat that followed. Then, in the epilogue of Tokyo Drift, Deckard, Shaw’s vengeful brother, was retconned to have killed Han (Jason Statham).

F9 confirms that Han did not perish in that race, though. Instead, he used Mr. Nobody’s assistance to stage a fatality (Kurt Russell). Mr. Nobody approached Han after Gisele — who had secretly been one of his agents — was slain. Mr. Nobody is a persistent government spy who has repeatedly recruited Toretto and his pals over the years. He replaced her with Han, giving the grieving man a new reason to live.

One of his tasks was to find the missing piece of the Aries gadget, which, if finished, could be used to take control of practically any computer system on the planet. Despite the fact that his objective was accomplished, Han was also compelled to help Elle, a little girl who was the daughter of the device’s creators. Han and Mr. Nobody took Elle under their wing and staged his demise so that everyone would assume he had passed away. He was the last person who might have connected with Elle and was also the secret to turning the device on. Before Jakob’s search for the Aries brought Mia Toretto (Jordana Brewster) and Letty to Tokyo to find out more about his death, the two remained in hiding for years.

Han was cheerfully and swiftly welcomed back into the company, bringing a young adult named Elle (Anna Sawai). Even though Elle was momentarily taken away and used almost to trigger the device, Han managed to save her during the film’s final chase. The movie ends with the two of them attending a barbeque celebration at the restored Toretto mansion. In the post-credits scene, F9 indicated the potential repercussions of his “death,” though. As a result, Deckard Shaw (as well as his entire family) was shown to be more valiant than they had first appeared, with Deckard even earning the title of an honorary crew member.

In Fast X, will Han seek retaliation against the Shaw family?

In the post-credits sequence from F9, Deckard was questioning a criminal in order to learn more about a strange new case. Deckard opened the door after hearing a knock and was startled to discover Han still alive. It’s an intriguing setup, but there are still unanswered issues regarding Han’s attitude toward Deckard and his position in the group. The two might be able to put the past behind them and concentrate on their potential future as allies.

Han could, however, also be seeking retribution against the Shaws, especially in light of the fact that Deckard attempted to assassinate Han and that Gisele was ultimately killed thanks to Owen’s and Deckard’s plots. Even while it seems like Han might officially be back in the game, future chapters will probably go into more detail about his relationship with the crew and the Shaw family.
