Iron Man faces the biggest dilemma anyone can come across in their lifetime, to choose between saving his life or giving in to his addiction.
Tony Stark has made a reputation for himself as a drug addict and an alcoholic throughout his life in the Marvel comics. Time from to time, he has struggled between life with and without addictions but now in the latest issue of Iron Man, Stark must choose what he values more his life or his ideals. Iron Man has indeed been a great example as a hero, following his heart but always keeping the sense of responsibility above all, on other hand Tony Stark has maintained his carefree playboy status often ruining his relationships with his companions, risking the lives of others and almost ending his career. His resolve as a hero has been subjected to a test repeatedly and he has passed many times but not always.
Iron Man Almost Meets His End
In the previous issue, Iron man assembles a team to take fight and down Michael Korvac. Michael Korvav is a wielder of cosmic power who is obsessed with acquiring powers that are comparable to that of a GOD. When the showdown takes place, he sets off an explosion which ends up wiping out a part of Iron Man’s team, he also puts up a serious fight against Iron Man and Hellcat and ends up injuring them both seriously. This could have been the end of our mighty hero as his neck got broken but he is saved by Hellcat who takes him away to provide him the help he needs despite being injured herself. A broken neck would result in an instant death but luckily for our hero, his suit of armor kept holding his neck in place.
Facing The Test
Iron Man #6, written by Christopher Cantwell and art by Cafu, puts Iron Man in a literal life and death situation where he has to choose between his life and succumbing to his addictions. After being seriously injured he is taken for some treatment where he repeatedly loses and regains his consciousness while laying on the operation table. Between these short moments, he figures that Misty Knight is about to inject him with steroids and opioid hydromorphone. These drugs are used to treat patients with severe pain by changing the way the brain feels and responds to pain.
Iron Man is familiar with the effects of these drugs as a result of his life as an addict and also acknowledges the repercussions he could face due to his choices. Stark is aware that his death is certain should he refuse to take those drugs as his Blood-Brain barrier has also been damaged. Just like any normal human, Stark also chooses to save his life in the split second he got to make the choice. Each and every loyal fan of Marvel comic knows the fact that Tony Stark is too headstrong to do something he wishes not to.
He is truly a hero as he would sacrifice his life to save the lives of others but at the same time he would even fight off death until he is certain that everyone is safe and with a major threat like Michael Korvac still alive, he easily trades his sobriety for his life. Although the future is uncertain about what the result of his choices would be but considering the price he had to pay for his life, it is already determined that we will witness the prime Iron Man in a fight with this great evil.
