Finally, the moment Iron Man fans have been waiting for since 2019 is here, at last, there is finally a chance of Robert Downey Jr. returning to the MCU as stated by himself
2019 was a really strange year for Iron man fans when fans got the epic conclusive final battle they have always asked for. But the cost that the Avengers paid for their victory was too high a price. While there was a jolt of happiness to see all of our favorite Heroes unite against the ultimate foe, there was also a sense of sorrow to have lost what we held dear to us. Two of our beloved heroes, Black Widow and Iron Man, were sacrificed in order to attain that victory.
Robert Downey Jr. became a sensational star after he appeared in the MCU as Tony Stark a.k.a. Iron Man. After his amazing role in the very first movie of the Marvel Cinematic Universe “Iron Man(2008)”, he went on to reprise his role in ten films within the MCU. He got immense love all around the globe and his character became the most popular Cinematic Superhero of his time.
Sadly, all of that came to an end when he sacrificed himself while using the Infinity Stones in order to wipe Thanos and his goons out of existence. He died an honorable death, a death befitting a hero but ever since then the fans have been demanding his return in the MCU and Robert hasn’t really been giving us a lot of hope up until now.
The Ray Of Hope For Iron Man ’s Return
While Robert Downey Jr. was talking to GQ in a profile for Tom Holland regarding his latest film Cherry, he very subtly hinted at chances for his return to the MCU. He stated “It’s funny, I bumped into Keanu [Reeves] the other day, somewhere in Malibu, I think, and he told me he’d just been filming The Matrix again; he’d stepped back into that world that he once occupied. I asked him what it felt like: ‘Like being in Australia.’ What I am saying is there was a Spider-Man before Tom Holland and there will be a Spider-Man after Tom Holland. That’s facts, Tommo. Sorry. Well…I have alighted, for now. Real-world to save. But never say never.”
It’s very well known how much Robert Downey Jr loves playing the character and how much he is attached to it, it is obvious that some part of him would still want to play the character that changed his life. However just wishful thinking for his return is not really a thing that would happen in the MCU, but with the current state of the studios, there are a number of ways in which he may return.
In Avengers: Endgame, Tony Stark made time travel possible in order to save his prodigy, Peter Parker a.k.a. Spiderman and since time travel is actually a thing in the MCU, it is entirely possible that the same would be used to bring back the fallen hero from the past so that he may once again aid in defeating an unimaginable foe.
According to a popular fan theory, the second way in which Tony Stark may return to the MCU is as an A.I. During the funeral scene of Avengers: Endgame, a homographic film was played which was recorded previously by Tony Stark in case of an untimely event. Since he already expected his demise, it is possible that he downloaded his consciousness into F.R.I.D.A.Y.’s mainframe and may now return as a Stark A.I. who resumes helping the Avengers in their quest to protect the world.
Whichever way this may happen does not matter as long as the fans get their beloved hero back. Just the mere thought of Robert Downey Jr.’s return as Iron Man in the MCU is more than enough to create an enormous wave of joy and excitement for the fans. until that happens let’s just hope for the best and wait patiently believing that the studios won’t disappoint their many loyal fans
