To answer this, we will be looking at instances in the series and the manga that the fans called are some places where Goku got overconfident. Now that you have been warned, let’s get started.
First thing first, how did this question, Is Goku overconfident? came to be. So in the movie Dragon Ball Z Resurrection F, Whiz the current mentor of Goku and Vegeta talks about their weakness. As he goes on about Goku he says, Goku is so overconfident that he lets his guard down which sets him up to fail. With this statement, the question arrived, Is Goku Overconfident? Let’s see. We will be taking into account several instances where fans thought Goku was overconfident. Before coming to the instances, we should know the true meaning of Overconfidence. Overconfidence is a belief in one’s own abilities that exceed the parameters of reality. A perfect example of overconfidence is when Vegeta let Cell reach is perfect form because he thought he can defeat him resulting in Cell beating the crap out of Vegeta. Now let’s come to instances.
Goku Vs Frieza full fight
The time when after reaching Super Saiyan, let Frieza reach his full power. Now it’s not an example of overconfidence. Let us explain when Goku told Frieza to Goku full power he is certain of the fact that he can defeat him. And he does. So, if your confident enough that you can do something and you end up doing it how is it overconfidence. It is the absolute certainty and belief in your capabilities.
Goku Telling Vegeta That He Is Stronger
After coming back from the hyperbolic time chamber with Gohan, after a while Goku tells Vegeta that he is stronger than Vegeta. Now, this isn’t overconfidence either, it’s the observation of a situation. We are talking about beings that can sense power. And if you look at it as a whole Goku was a lot stronger than Vegeta. So That wasn’t overconfidence either.
Giving Cell a Senzu and Letting Gohan Fight Him.
At the time of the Cell Games, Goku provides Cell with a Senzu and lets Gohan fight him. Now before going any further remember that Goku has been fighting since he was 11 and at the time of Cell games, he is 27 years old, which is an experience of 16 years of fighting which also includes planet level threats like Frieza. So, letting Gohan fight with Cell, that wasn’t overconfidence that was the certainty of the fact that Gohan hides greater power than anyone as we have seen throughout the series. And as obviously a better and more experienced fighter than Gohan and as being his father and mentor, he knows that thing even if Gohan himself doesn’t know it. And Gohan ends up defeating the cell and Goku knew this from the start.
Conclusion
Now, these instances are some of the biggest ones where fans agreed that Goku was overconfident. And as we told he wasn’t. He is taken in that way cause he is a character who likes to get more out of the fight. He starts on backfoot and goes to full power with his opponent to check their power and his own. He is not confident that he would win but he is confident in his abilities. We have seen a lot of times where he realized that he doesn’t stand a chance.
What we can call him is Naive. That he tries to think that the fight is a competition even when the opponent wants to dominate and kill him with his full strength. He is constantly caught off guard by the fact the one he is fighting is not a contest but a fight to the death. That’s why he gets off guard which resulted in his failure many times. Saying him overconfident is an inaccurate and failure in observing his character.
We just answered the question, Is Goku Overconfident? and turns out he is not but he is Naïve and sometimes extremely stupid when it comes to his opponents. So, the statement made by Whiz is completely inaccurate. Please don’t get offended, this was just a friendly article on a statement made by a character. We love the dragon ball franchise like you guys and it will always reside in our hearts.
