Is Lady Loki a Villain?

Lady Loki, All the evidence at the moment points to the fact that this other variant Loki that the TVA is hunting is female. If that’s true, is she a villain?

Lady Loki, a part of Phase Four of the MCUrecently premiered on June 9, 2021, on Disney+, surely a big hit we all waited for. After stealing the Tesseract, the 2012 version of the god of mischief teleported away during the Avengers’ time heist in Avengers: Endgame. Following the after scenes in Loki, he was caught by the Time Variance Authority. Episode 1 ended with the suspense of who this variant of Loki might be and what happens next. But the rumors are all over the place, is this variant Lady Loki? And is she a villain?

Considering all the mayhem it can potentially cause, the TVA needs to monitor and rectify Variants across all time. But there is one variant proving to be particularly elusive and deceptive. TVA Agent Mobius (Owen Wilson) believes Loki will be able to help them apprehend this variant. Because the variant is another Loki from a different timeline. And according to Mobius if there’s anyone who probably knows this variant best, it’s him.

The premiere ends in Salina, Oklahoma, circa 1858. A portal opens, and TVA hunters step out through it. They plan to “prune” the scene, that is, clip this new branch of the timeline so that it never even happened, but then they spot a hooded figure in the distance. Despite a straight-up confirmation that the variant is Loki, the final scene refuses to show them to us and leaves them covered in a cloak. Why would they do that if there is not another twist that they’re hiding? There are a couple of rumors regarding the identity of Loki’s villain and how it factors into the future of the trickster god.

As many suspected that Lady Loki might show up as this variant of Loki in the show as many leaked photos from the series hinted that Sophia Di Martino is seen wearing a similar kind of costume, which is clearly green and resembles other Loki costumes. Particularly the gold piece near the neck.

Who is Lady Loki?

We all know Loki’s form calls him genderfluid. In the comics, Lady Loki is one of the most notable of Loki’s forms and whose gender fluidity has become a crucial aspect of the character’s canon. The character takes some of its influence from the Norse mythology surrounding the trickster god, who prominently featured as an elder woman. In the Loki: Where Mischief Lies novel, author Mackenzi Lee made Loki’s pansexuality and gender fluidity canon. That means any new explorations of Lady Loki will likely be based on that premise rather than the more outdated versions that came before.

Lady Loki is just Loki, her personality and traits are the same as the God of Mischief. She can vary from heroism to villainy, manipulation to altruism, and is, of course, incredibly stylish. Because of those similarities, the thing we can learn most about Loki from the fact that Lady Loki might show up is more to do with circumstance and story than character. Also, Remember Loki is a trickster and could very well make himself a woman or any other form he wishes to.

In the comic Thor & Loki: Double Trouble #3, Lady Loki has a device that allows her to travel between dimensions, and the same could be the case in the show. Lady Loki hasn’t appeared on screen before, but comic book fans will already be familiar with this particular incarnation of Thor’s brother. Lady Loki stuck around for a few years, manipulating Marvel’s heroes just like before, but what’s interesting about the comic book version is that this is still Loki and not an alternate version of the character. However, it looks like the Disney+ show may have tweaked this idea, introducing Lady Loki as an entirely different version of the character instead.

Is Lady Loki a Villain?

Lady Loki is played by the actress Sophia Di Martino. So far, episode 1 doesn’t reveal a lot about her. However, the final few moments of the episode that hint towards Loki could be her. The Head Writer of the show said:

“As for Lady Loki, remember the toxic-romance Black List screenplay that first got Waldron in the door at Marvel. Loki’s cinematic journey has been so tied up in his relationship with his brother, Thor, that he’s never had an onscreen love interest. Waldron, who still aspires to be Nora Ephron, says there certainly are some love stories running through his season.” Although we could not be certain about Lady Loki being the villain, if the hooded figure is Lady Loki, then she might be a dangerous threat according to Agent Mobius. Whatever happens, it will surely be a treat to us all. And we are eagerly waiting to find out what happens next.
