The Emmy nominated Netflix original comedy drama series Russian Doll has already begun its production for season 2 in March 2021. The show was originally supposed to begin the shooting of its second season in March 2020 but faced quite a bit of delay because of the pandemic.
Directed by Natasha Lyonne, Amy Poehler, and Lesley Headland, the first season of Russian Doll came out on February 1st,2019, and became an instant success. Even going as far as getting nominated for five Emmys in a row. The first season focuses on Nadia (Natasha Lyonne) who is stuck in a recurring, continuous time loop. The plot revolves around Nadia’s 36th Birthday party that her best friend throws for her and how she dies on her birthday only to find herself back at the bathroom of her party. She is made to re-experience the various events of that day again and again until she figures out how to break the loop. The party seems inescapable and the viewers along with the characters seem to go through a Deja Vu.
While talking about Russian Doll season two, Natasha has said, “our plans are to continue to dig deep in a way that is aesthetically enjoyable and feels funny on your insides.” Pictures taken on the set of Russian Doll season 2 reveal that the season will most probably be set in two different timelines, the retro cars seen on the set hint at the other timeline being the 1980s. It is also being speculated that this season will introduce a male lead or love interest of Nadia.
Here’s what Russian Doll season 2 can have in store.
The second season is expected to answer a ton of questions that the audience may have had after the end of season 1. The 1st season ended with almost a cliffhanger leaving it up to the audience to interpret their version of the ending. A number of theories branched out but there are two main theories among fans, about the ending, that seem to have some substance. While one side claims that Nadia and Alan successfully transcended realities and finally were united again, the other more skeptical side believes that it was nothing more than one of the millions of timelines that may have taken place. Apart from answering questions, the second season is also likely to travel between two timelines as mentioned earlier. This means there will be more characters and the time loop(if any) will become even more bewildering.
Russian Doll season 2 cast
As far as the Russian Doll season 2 cast is concerned, Natasha is all set to play Nadia in the second season but apart from her, all the other cast member’s return has a big question mark attached to it which gives way to more speculations regarding the new cast members. One of the most well-known faces who will join the show in the 2nd season is Annie Murphy, well-known for her role in the popular comedy series on Netflix, Schitt’s Creek.
The question of whether there will be a third season of the show was answered long back by Natasha Lyonne herself when she said in a press conference a few years ago that the show is supposed to be a three-season series. So we all can anticipate another season that will tickle our funny bones and leave us perplexed at the same time.
Russian Doll season 2 release date
Although the filming of Russian Doll season 2 has already begun, we do not have an exact idea of what the release date will be. It is too early to map out a release date but the show will most likely air by March 2022 if not by the end of 2021.
