Laurence Fishburne was not asked to make a comeback in the upcoming The Matrix 4. Laurence portrayed Morpheus who was Neo’s mentor in the original Matrix trilogy. The character and the portrayal by Fishburne became very popular in pop culture. Morpheus became the second most famous character from The Matrix, first being Neo.

Fishburne’s name wasn’t there when The Matrix’s cast list released. However, considering his importance in the trilogy and the fact that Carrie-Anne Moss and Reeves will return to play their characters, Fishburne’s name absent caused worry and disappointment among the fans. Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss themselves are very important characters from the original Matrix movie. And if Fishburne’s name wasn’t there, does that mean his character will not be featured? Or is that Fishburne himself doesn’t want to return? The mysterious nature of the upcoming film is already making speculations. In a recent interview, Laurence Fishburne revealed that he wasn’t asked to return for The Matrix 4.
“I have not been invited. Maybe that will make me write another play. I wish them well. I hope it’s great.”

Also, he confirmed that he won’t be in the upcoming Lana Wachowski‘s film. But his absence in The Matrix 4 raises a lot of questions. The theory regarding his absence might be that Morpheus was murdered in The Matrix Online, its an MMORPG, and is likely to be a part of film’s canon. The game’s establishment, it was designed as a source to continue the story of The Matrix after the completion of the film. It’s not sure if Matrix 4 will have some connection with the story of the game. But Morpheus’ absence serves as another powerful indication.
It is uncertain, how a Matrix film without Morpheus would look and feel like. However, he is not the only actor who is not returning in The Matrix 4. But given the importance of his character Morpheus, it’s quite noticeable. Fishburne holds a lot of importance in the franchise and even if he is not returning and his character Morpheus is played by some other actor. It will still dishearten his fans who want to see him in the role.
