Dune, 2020 by Denis Villeneuve is eminently on the waiting list of the movies to be released this year. Hopes are high for the cinema to be in its full vigor by the end of the year. The movie is enriched with a cast. It is directed on the lines of a complicated novel. The Dune is set to become the biggest movie of the year. It could definitely bring a change in the film of this genre.
When we refer to a sci-fi film Star Wars always holds the ground. Dune, on the other hand, is the entire opposite of Star Wars on every level.
About the novel
Talking of sci-fi movies, Tatooine is deemed to be inspired by Dune. Lucas in Star Wars has used the word ‘spice’ which is taken from Dune. However, it has a completely different interpretation there. Taking ideas of including spice or desert area does not signify it is a setup of Dune. Contrarily, it is the antithesis.
Similar to the idea of Chosen One in Star Wars, Paul Atreids in Dune is set to be Kwisatz Haderach. Rey, Luke, or Anakin left the desert planet to transform themselves into the universe.
Paul however is not even close to this. He comes from the cosmopolitan Galaxy. His transformation is a subtle change from his early life. He isn’t the one who could equity everything. The book questions whether the Chosen One is a good thing.
Luke and Rey believed in taking back the lost glory. Paul however does not believe in power structures and tries to reign over everything. Rey and Luke are the fascinations of heroes. Paul on the other hand is subtle and is the realistic view of a novel hero.
Concept of heroes and villains is subsided
Space Opera centers around fascination where it aims at a larger audience. Such movies bring more and more multiplicity in the reader’s minds to what he reads. He is not exactly an anti-hero. He turns out to become a messiah. The movie is completely lackadaisical on this matter. For Dune, there is no viewer to satisfy. Therefore, the concept of the ideal heroes and villains is subsided.
The most important point of difference is that in Star Wars the cosmopolitan Galaxy is the place for exploration. The initial point is the desert planet. For Paul, it is not the cosmopolitan galaxy where the exploration begins but it is the place he belongs to.
The only point on which Star Wars is similar to Dune can be seen as. When Queen Padme Amidala leaves her home in Naboo with daughter Leia, in the prequel. She starts her reign on Tatooine where Leia becomes the queen ultimately.
It just comes to changing entire Star Wars to bring it to comparison with Denis Villeneuve, Dune. And yes, Paul hates sand.
