MCU’s Black Widow has been delayed AGAIN! And is being pushed back from May to July.
After almost a year of wait, Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Black Widow has officially been delayed yet again. Black Widow has been a much- anticipated movie following the death of the character in Avengers: Endgame in 2019. Originally Black Widow was supposed to release on May 1, 2020, but due to the ongoing pandemic, the movie got pushed back by almost a year due to the theatre’s being closed globally. Though it was not a much-appreciated decision, Marvel studios remained fixated on it as a gesture of respecting the hard work that everyone had put into the making of the movie. Some would even say that Marvel Studios is following into the footsteps of Warner Bros, leading to the decline of its popularity among the fans. As irritating as it may seem, Black Widow’s recent delay might be the best course of action for both the studio and the fans.
The Reasons For The Continuous Delays
Black Widow was supposed to mark the beginning of MCU’s Phase 4 and as such there were a lot of high hopes hanging on it. Promising to explore the back story of the character, Black Widow teased to shed some light on Natasha’s family before the Avengers. It was supposed to highlight Natasha’s battle against a brand new villain, The Task Master, and the infamous Red Room, the organization responsible for training women as assassins which ultimately led to the origin of the hero. It was supposed to lay the foundation of a new beginning in the MCU but the COVID- 19 pandemics ruined it all. In order to stop the spread of the virus, theatres got shut down globally.
Currently, the situation has started to get worse again after a moment of relief due to a decline in the number of cases globally. Although theatres are getting reopened they are ordered to operate only on a 20-25% capacity. Despite the loss that the studios would suffer due to a release on streaming platforms, MCU’s president Kevin Fiege did not follow the idea previously stating that an online release could be a violation of the basic idea of its name, the “Marvel Cinematic Universe”. However, the most recent delay from May to July 9 could be a blessing in disguise.
The Clever Decision
Along with the decision to push Black Widow back to July 9, the studios also decided to release the movie on Disney+ allowing the fans to watch the movie from their homes safely, given that they have “Premiere Access”, meaning that they would have to pay a little extra to watch the movie on Disney+.
Theatres would likely operate at a higher capacity than they are now if not at full. An online release was approved considering the massive success of MCU’s latest projects. The Falcon and The Winter Soldier became the most-watched show globally, surpassing The Mandalorian and WandaVision. Of course, this is likely to be the last delay in the final release of the movie. Let’s hope that this is the bump that we face before we actually get to watch the movie. Black Widow comes out on July 9 only in theatres and on Disney+
