Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange

Scarlet Witch Almost Succeeded Doctor Strange As The Sorcerer Supreme In The Comics

There came a point in the comics where Scarlet Witch was almost chosen as the next Sorcerer Supreme.

Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch are among the few heroes in the Marvel comics who wield magical powers. While Doctor Strange earned the title of Sorcerer Supreme through his talents and hard work, wielding strong magical powers, there’s no denying that Scarlet Witch is in a league of her own and when Doctor Strange was looking was his successor, Scarlet Witch became a promising Candidate. Amidst the story of “The New Avengers”, Doctor Strange was forced to look for his replacement due to some major reason.

Doctor Strange

While he always engages in magical battles against evil, he was forced to resort to undesirable means to win a fight. In order to save the Avengers, he was forced to use Dark Magical arts of Dark Magic as the last option for his victory. Having betrayed his values, he was no longer worthy of holding the title and so he sets out on the lookout for potential replacement candidates who could take up his mantle and prevent Dormammu from becoming the Sorcerer Supreme.

Finding A Worthy Successor

The Marvel Universe has witnessed the rise of different characters who earned themselves the title of the Sorcerer Supreme. These included the mage Merlin, Sir Isaac Newton, and Ilyana Rasputin. Unfortunately, Scarlet Witch has never been one of these few, despite her unimaginable magical powers. The reasons for that are simple, she is volatile, rash, and her nature unpredictable. In addition to that, her messed-up past has added to the reasons why she was never chosen to be the Sorcerer Supreme. The New Avengers ‘Dark Reign storyline by Brian Michael Bendis, Billy Tan, Matt Banning, and Justin Ponsor, finds Doctor Strange regretting the fact that he had to give in to the dark side in order to win.

Firstly, to stop the Hulk upon his return to the Earth in World War Hulk and secondly against the Hood while he was possessed by Dormammu. Burdened by his guilt, he starts his search for his successor and turns to the Avengers for help. While on the Quinjet, the Eye Of Agamotto displays images of all the worthy candidates who could be potential replacements. These included Wiccan, Nico Minoru, Ghost-Rider, Agatha Harkness, Doctor Doom, and Brother Voodoo, along with all of these was Scarlet Witch on the bottom left.

For obvious reasons, Scarlet Witch didn’t make the cut, and the Eye chooses Brother Voodoo as its new owner. While Wanda Maximoff is among the elite magic users in the Marvel Universe, it’s a surprise she was never chosen for this title. Whether or not this feat continues in the future too remains to be seen.
