The very first trailer for Marvel’s “Shang Chi & The Legend Of The Ten Rings” is here and here is a breakdown of all the things we have to look forward to.
Marvel’s first Asian superhero, Shang Chi, is finally arriving in theatres this September and Marvel released the first trailer of the movie on April 19. The epic scenes in the action packed trailer gave a very clear idea of all the awesome stuff that the fans are going to witness in the movie. Shang Chi was initially created in 1973 as a result of the growing popularity of Martial Arts in the U.S. and is considered to be the world’s best hand to hand fighter of the Marvel universe. It’s about time that Marvel decided to bring this amazing hero to the big screen. The cast of the movie includes Simu Liu as Shang Chi, Tony Chiu-Wai Leung as Wenwu (The Mandarin), Awkwafina as Katy, Florian Munteanu as Razor Fist, Fala Chen as Jiang Li, and Meng’er Zhang as Xialing. Although Marvel seems to have moved a little away from the comics but despite that the trailer looks quite promising.
Shang Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings Trailer Breakdown
The trailer began with Shang Chi revisits the training center of his youth followed by a glimpse of his room. Wenwu’s voice narrates “I gave you ten years to live your life and where did that get you” suggesting that Shang Chi ran away from his father to live a peaceful and modest life. There’s a misdirect in the follow-up scene where a fancy car pulls up just like the amazing cars that are driven by previous marvel heroes like Tony Stark, Stephen Strange and Natasha Romanoff. But unlike them, instead of driving the car, our hero is actually working as a valet along with his friend Katy. The trailer then slides into the memory flashback where Shang Chi is training under his father and a mysterious masked figure.
This masked figure is the Marvel villain “Death Dealer” who was a MI6 assassin in the comics who secretly worked for the Ten- Rings. In another memory flash, we see young Shang Chi with his father wearing wrist rings who are actually “The Ten Rings”, pieces of technology having these roots in an ancient alien civilization called the Makluans. This is where the MCU presumably drifted a little away from the comics. In the comics, the Ten Rings were actually worn in fingers by the Mandarin, however, in the trailer, we see them as bracelets worn by Wenwu. This may or may not be the correct explanation but in the comics, the Mandarin actually stole the Ten Rings from Fin Fang Foom, the ancient Makluan who protected the Ten Rings. So it could be possible that the rings are large so that they could fit in the hands of this huge Dragon like being, so what was as small as rings for the dragon may be big like bracelets for mere humans.
The trailer may also connect to “The Falcon & The Winter Soldier” series which repeatedly talks about a mysterious “Powe Broker”, who may in-fact be the Mandarin as the trailer shows a Mortal Kombat like cage fight night club which could be a popular place in Madripoor (a place overlooked by the Power Broker). Appearing right after scene is Florian Muntanu, playing Razor Fist. He is actually seen fighting Shang Chi with his signature razor fist during the bus fight scene. Also, the emblem on his chest contains a Ten Rings logo which confirms that he is also working for the organization. We see Shang Chi fighting his sister Xialing, who is probably angry because her father favors his son who ran away instead of her who stayed loyal by his side. We also see Shang Chi facing off against his father, The Mandarin in a follow-up scene.
The Conclusion
There are tons of other stuff that can be made from the trailer like an ancient mystical battle, possibly about how The Mandarin established his rule and his kingdom, or the cameo by the comedian Zach Cherry who previously appeared in Spider-Man: Homecoming playing the street vendor who asks spidey to do a flip. Going any further is only going to spoil the movie for the readers but the main thing that can be concluded after watching the trailer is that Shang Chi is undoubtedly going to be one of the greatest movies in the MCU, so lets all wait till September 3 when Shang Chi and The Legend Of The Ten Rings hits the theatres.
