The Writer of Marvel’s Star Wars High Republic recently shed some light on the Hutts’ reality
The Hutts were a sentient species of large Gastropods existing in the Star Wars universe. The creatures had short arms, wide cavernous mouths, and huge eyes. They were believed to be natives of planet Varl but their adopted homeworld was Nal Hutta. The members of this species were often stereotyped as crime lords and the Star Wars galaxy witnessed them as some of the most infamous gangsters. The Grand Hutt Council of these galactic gangsters was responsible for controlling the Hutt Clan crime syndicate. However, their influence was much more than that of mere gangsters. The huts were like warlords but their area of dominance contracted before the Skywalker saga, nearly 200 years prior. The rise of the Republic and Jedi Order forced the Hutts to shorten their domain and resort to smaller petty crimes, like when we witness the famous member of the species “Jabba the Hutt”.
The Curtains Rising
The latest issue of Marvel’s Star Wars: The High Republic series, written by Cavan Scott with art by Ario Anindito, takes the Jedi on a revealing investigation. Jedi Knight Keeve Trennis and Trandosan Jedi Master Sskeer go on to investigate the wreckage of a Hutt ship along with the Jedi twins Terec and Ceret. The ship was sabotaged and attacked by the fierce raiders called the Nihil. Their investigation leads them to the interior of the ship where they learn that the crew of the ship including a Hutt clan member were killed prior to their arrival.
The most shocking thing that left them wondering was finding a Hutt in republic space. It was only until later when they learn that the region of space was recently integrated into Republic space, which explains the Hutt’s presence outside of their turf. Their discovery ultimately revealed that the Republic was in-fact expanding and taking control of the domain of the Hutt. In an interview with the Comic Book Nation podcast, the writer of the series opened up about the Hutts’ past while also teasing the Hutts’ return to power in the near future of the series.
He mentioned the reasons for the downfall of the syndicate and also hinted that their possibility of them joining forces with the Jedi and Starlight Beacon. “With the Hutts as well, we know that with the warlords, there is a history there when they weren’t just a bunch of gangsters, they had power then they’ve got their own area of space. They’ve got Hutt Space. And so then there must have been conflicts when we were discussing the idea of Republic pushing out into the frontier that yes, they would come up against the Nihil, but they would also come up against people like the Hutts who have had a free reign in that past space.
It gives us the chance to think back to a period of time when the Hutts were perhaps a bit more active in every sense of the word, then we see them later on where perhaps they do have a bit more power because there isn’t an Empire keeping them in place or isn’t a Republic, even in the same way we’ve seen the Republic. I moved them to be an active part of the galaxy and what that would mean. And going back to the old saying ‘the enemy of my enemy is my friend’ and seeing how that would work, and seeing if there would be a moment when the Republic and the Hutts would have to join forces.” he stated.
It is expected that the clan’s history would make a major impact on the future of the series and the biggest gift for the fans is the appearance of a younger version of Jabba the Hutt that is being speculated.
