Although the iconic sitcom, The Office, aired its last episode on May 16, 2013, to most fans the show’s finale episode came out two years prior when Michael Scott left Dunder Mifflin.
In the episode “Goodbye, Michael,” which completed 10 years a few days ago, Michael Scott (Steve Carell) leaves the Dunder Mifflin paper company to move to Colorado with his fiancé Holly. This episode is arguably one of the most bittersweet episodes that were aired on US television, which is justified because Steve Carell was almost the soul of The Office, and without him, it felt like a whole another show. Oscar Nunez, who plays the role of an accountant in The Office told Yahoo! Entertainment, “It was like, ‘Wow, the show’s over, and now we’re going to do another show without Steve.’” He continued, “ Someone’s going to come in and be the boss.
The Office was over: Steve left, and now it’s another show.” The sitcom however continued for two more seasons but it can be unanimously deduced that it somehow lost its essence with Carell leaving. Whether Steve himself decided to leave or his contract was not renewed by the network, is still a point of contention among fans.
Oscar Nunez further stated that the reunion was emotional for everyone involved, he remembered, “People were crying all over the place, It was very emotional.” Oscar further said that after a point creator Greg Daniels had to step in and tell the cast to keep a stiff upper lip. “The hardest part was just saying to the actors, ‘This is a comedy show, you can’t cry in every scene with Steve! Try to care a little bit less.’”
Steve Carell’s gift to his co-stars.
Flannery (who plays Meredith) also shared her memories of the farewell episode, “Goodbye, Michael,” she also talked about the expensive gift Steve gave to his co-stars, “When Steve left The Office, he gave everybody a Rolex watch,” she further stated, “I still wear it. It reminds of me that amazing experience.”
Steve Carell’s Michael Scott is still ruling almost every Office fans hearts and we cannot help but imagine what the show would have been like if he did not leave.
