With Zack Snyder’s Justice League being less than a month away and all the snippets leaked by Zack himself on his Vero account since 2017, the social media has been buzzing with speculations that Zack Snyder has reshot the ending of his upcoming HBO Max flick “with a hero cameo that will blow hard-core fans’ minds”. Check out our speculations of the possible cameo down below as we try to fit the pieces together.
GREEN LANTERN
On the brightest day, in the blackest night, no spoiler shall escape our website. While Ryan Reynolds took to Twitter to squash the rumors of him reprising his role as Hal Jordan/Green Lantern by reiterating his digs at his 2011 superhero movie,
“It’s not me. But what a cool pirate flag cameo as Hal. Maybe it’s another GL? But for me, the suit stays in the closet. I mean, the computer.” You saw that right? Not the dig at the CGI suit but the “Maybe it’s another GL?”
It might seem that we are grasping at straws here but the theory of another Green Lantern showing up is not a far-fetched one. We know that Green Lanterns do exist in the DCEU as the opening battle of Justice League (2017) shows Steppenwolf slaying Yalan Gur, a Green Lantern, whose ring then flies off to find its next wearer with the ability to overcome fear. In the comics, Green Lantern has always been a founding member of the Justice League who even featured in the first-ever Justice League comic titled “Justice League of America” published in 1960.
It would make sense if GL also showed up at the climax of the ZSJL movie to take on the galactic threat, save the day and form the Justice League. In fact, a 2017 Reddit post by a VFX artist, who claimed to have worked on Justice League (2017) and chose to remain anonymous, revealed that the scrapped post-credit scene from the movie included two Green Lanterns, Kilowog and Tomar-Re, visiting Bruce Wayne.
So, will it Hal Jordan swoop down, ring blazing, on the Parademons? Probably not. Unlike most Superhero names, the title Green Lantern is more like a job-description; a space-cop with a super-powered ring powered by the will of the wielder (try saying that fast). Thus, there have been many iterations of the character patrolling the Space Sector 2814 (I understood that reference). It could be John Stewart (no, not the comedian), Kyle Rayner, or even Guy Gardner. Nothing is guaranteed but rest assured, somewhere in the multiverse, Deadpool is screaming: DON’T MAKE THE SUIT GREEN. OR ANIMATED.
RYAN CHOI (ATOM)
Think of him as DC’s version of Ant-Man with a Ph.D. and a prestigious job. On his Vero account, Zack Snyder posted a picture the Chinese actor Zheng Kai captioned as follows: Ryan Choi “Director of nanotechnology Star labs”. Makes sense since he can shrink to subatomic levels in the comics.
He was set to appear in the Justice League (2017) until his footage was cut from the movie. With his role restored, he and Dr. Silas Stone (Cyborg’s father) will be experimenting on the same Mother Box that was given to mankind for safekeeping after the alliance warded off Steppenwolf’s first invasion. Whether he chooses to aid Dr. Silas Stone in saving his son’s life or will his departure cause Dr. Silas Stone to take matters into his own hand. In both the scenarios, he will have ultimately caused the transformation of Victor Stone to Cyborg. BOOYAH!
MARTIAN MANHUNTER
Harry Lennix, who played General Calvin Swanwick in Man of Steel (2013) and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), himself confirmed that his character would be revealed as Martian Manhunter or as in martian language we call him J’onn J’onzz. Even your go-to website for your assignments, Wikipedia, has officially listed his role as such. Like Green Lantern, he was also a founding member of Justice League and featured in the first ever issue of Justice League. The animated TV series Justice League (only 90s kids will remember) did an excellent job bringing him to the spotlight.
If you still don’t have any idea who this character is or what he can do, think of him as Professor X, Mystique, and Shadowcat from the X-Men all combined in one and throw in the power of flight. Spoiler Alert: With Superman going rogue in the upcoming Justice League, the team would be in need of a powerhouse character who can pack a punch and Martian Manhunter makes the perfect sense. Will we get to see him in action? Anything is possible in your dreams. Or NIGHTMARES.
ORION
Okay, this one might seem a little far-fetched but allow us to explain. With the trailer release of ZSJL, we know that New Gods will be playing a pivotal role. The trailer featured the likes of DeSaad, and we even got a glimpse of Granny Goodness! Oh my goodness. It only makes sense if they featured the most popular New God after Darkseid: Orion. In the comics, Orion is the son of Darkseid who, as a baby, is traded to Highfather Izaya, the leader of the rival faction of the New Gods, as a peace treaty between Apokolips and New Genesis. Later in the comics, Orion ends up killing Darkseid and taking his throne on Apokolips.
With Ava DuVerny already set to direct a New Gods movie, ZSJL might pave the way to introduce Orion as a backdoor protagonist. A megalomaniac like Darkseid isn’t the one to easily submit in the face of failure and Justice League might have to dispose of him permanently. Will Orion deliver the killing blow? Will he give in to the DARK SIDE? Zack Snyder’s Justice League releases on Thursday, 18th March 2021 exclusively on HBO MAX. If you don’t have an HBO MAX subscription, now would be a good time. “HAIL SNYDRA!” Woops, wrong universe.
