Avatar: The Way of Water made over $1 billion at the global box office less than two weeks after its release, much like its predecessor in 2009.
Avatar: The Way of Water, another highly anticipated film from director James Cameron, has surpassed $1 billion in box office receipts less than two weeks after its theatrical debut.
The Avatar sequel’s anticipated billion-dollar status has been officially confirmed, as stated by BoxOfficeGuru.com founder and editor Gitesh Pandya. The massive scientific sequel, which took 13 years to complete, has already surpassed the $1 billion mark after earning over $300 million domestically and $700 million overseas. Many industry insiders projected that the movie, which came out on December 16, would make ten figures over the holidays not long after its release.
Given that its 2009 predecessor, Avatar, is the highest-grossing movie of all time and has earned nearly $2.92 billion to date, Avatar: The Way of Water has a historically high standard to meet. Despite the fact that Cameron stated his Avatar sequel budget was a terrible business, the movie’s anticipated costs, which range from $360 to $450 million, including marketing expenses, have already resulted in a sizable profit for the Oscar-winning director.
Avatar 2 surpasses the Billion-Dollar mark.
Avatar: The Way of Water is director James Cameron’s third movie to gross over $1 billion worldwide, making him the second highest-grossing director of all time, after Steven Spielberg. For Cameron, the movie represents another historic accomplishment. Along with his two Avatar films, director James Cameron’s Oscar-winning epic love story gone wrong, Titanic, is the third-highest-grossing movie of all time, bringing in nearly $2.2 billion. With a $2.79 billion worldwide gross, Avengers: Endgame is nestled between two of Cameron’s top three movies. It remains to be seen if Avatar: The Way of Water will receive the same accolades as the original movie, which was nominated at the 82nd Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Film Editing.
Despite Avatar: The Way of Water’s lackluster debut in China, the film’s box office results are excellent. The movie received a rare release in the Asian country, but as of Dec. 26, it had only made about $100 million there, well short of the $357 million that analysts had predicted it would bring in over its run. While most domestic critics have lauded the picture’s quality and content, one Chinese film producer went so far as to say that the Avatar sequel wasn’t appropriate for Chinese consumers.
Sam Worthington (Jake Sully), Zoe Saldana (Neytiri), Sigourney Weaver (Kiri), Stephen Lang (Colonel Quaritch), Kate Winslet (Ronal), and Michelle Yeoh are among the cast members of Avatar: The Way of Water (Dr. Karina Mogue). The success of the second installment at the box office is encouraging for the franchise’s future since director James Cameron already revealed there will be three more installments: Avatar 3 would be released in December 2024, Avatar 4 in 2026, and Avatar 5 in 2028. The director’s cut of Avatar 3 by James Cameron has already garnered attention for its purported nine-hour running time and rumors that he has been striving to add finished visual effects to the entire production even before cuts.
