The Batman Is Set On Earth 2

A New Multiverse, A Fresh Start

With The Batman now officially wrapped filming and in post-production and still scheduled for March 2022 release date, some details have hit the internet that indicates that the new direction of DC is in fact going to be the multiverse.

The what now? Multiverse?

For the non-comic book readers who are not familiar with the term ‘multiverse’, it is basically a collection of parallel universes and different realities. It helps the writers to tell individual stories without being restricted by previously set rules about the character and interpret the character in their own way. In easy words, we are going to get different portrayals of DC characters on various different earth set in different realities.  The Batman is reportedly set to kick off the official Earth 2 continuity.

Different Earths? Earth 2? What?

Specifically here, Earth 2 refers to the different continuity of the DCEU, a different universe which is not connected to the already established DC characters and their stories. It’s a long road to the new wave of DC films whether it’s the reboot of Batman with Robert Pattinson under Matt Reeves or a reboot of Superman under J.J. Abrams and it seems Warner Brothers and DC comics have made it very clear that the future of DC is set to be in multiverse that is potentially going to be explored with the Flash movie.

This decision can lead to many superhero movies and shows becoming cannon in the multiverse of DC which spans across several media like the Batman movies of the past, shows like Superman and Lois and other Arrowverse show. It makes sense since Michael Keaton is set to reprise his Batman role in the upcoming Flash movie and Ezra Miller’s Flash has already made an appearance in the mega crossover event ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’.

This comes after the recent cancellation of their projects like New Gods and The Trench which indicates crucial decision making with higher ups at the DC comics and Warner Brothers regarding the future of DCEU. Zack Snyder’s established dark and unsaturated DCEU continuity has received mixed responses and failed to deliver the commercial potential of the DC superstars like Superman and Batman and even the Justice League itself. While Zack Snyder’s fans are virtually locked in a twitter battle to trend hashtags, Warner Brothers may have decided to go for a fresh start with these DC characters which is more in line to essence of their comic book counter parts like a Batman who doesn’t shoot people to death with machine guns and an optimistic Superman that actually inspires hope.

With everything said and done, The Batman will definitely be a pivoting point for the DCEU. It remains to be seen whether it will share same universe of J.J. Abrams’ Superman reboot or will it be set in an individual solo movie universe.
