The Vampire Diaries, horror fiction, has won millions of hearts of the people, especially teenagers. The one reason for watching the series is the presence of our favourite character- Damon Salvatore. The character serves as a major attraction for the show, played by actor Ian Somerhalder.
The naked blue eyes within those dark eyelashes, that wicked smile and the strangest sense of humour is what steals our hearts. Being in a positive and a negative role, Damon remains to be Damon, and he will get what he wants! But why does the villain of the story appeal us more than the hero?
THE GOOD COP AND BAD COP
Throughout the series, the Salvatore brothers included Stefan as the good cop and Damon as the bad cop. But Damon wasn’t always the bad one. Behind the impulsive killer, lied the man in love and despair. Initially, we do not like Damon because of the way his character is portrayed. But when we come to know the antagonist of the show is really not him, we fall with the older Salvatore.
HIS LOVE FOR KATHERINE AND ELENA
Meeting Elena made him follow the road of selfless love. Katherine was his first love since 1864. Even after Katherine’s betrayal for her selfish motives, Damon never gave up on finding her since the past 145 YEARS! Hard to believe, but its Damon when his heart goes out to someone. But after meeting Katherine once again, his love changed into hate.
Elena changed the tiniest bits of worst things that Damon had within him. “It will always be Stefan”, is what Damon knew always. But his selflessness for Elena never came between her and Stefan. The impulsive killer did not remain impulsive anymore. Although, a few instances made him crave for his bad habits, but he always found his way to his good side. Elena, too, saw the good behind the bad and left everything for Damon. He was also ready to wait for Elena for the next 60 years! That is who the real Damon Salvatore is.
HE DID CARE
While carrying his bottle of bourbon in one hand and a victim in another, he never really cared whom he might kill in his uncontrollable rage. His humanity was somewhere lost in his dark side. However, on the brighter side, he did care, but never showed. For example, Rose’s death affected him, and the scene where he killed her did make us cry with him. “I feel Elena, Okay? And it sucks!”.
HIS BEST BUDDIES
Apart from Elena, Alaric and Bonnie shared a deep bond with Damon. Alaric, who was Damon’s best buddy, never really hated him. Be it killing his wife, or killing him for that matter, he never left Damon’s side. Bonnie, on the other hand, was seen being threatened by Damon initially. But later, the love-hate relationship grew into nothing but love. Both Alaric and Bonnie were his friends by heart.
