The producer of Nicolas Cage’s National Treasure 3 provides an upbeat update

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer provides a positive update for Nicolas Cage’s National Treasure 3 and confirms intentions for a theatrical release.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has given National Treasure 3 starring Nicolas Cage a positive update as spectators eagerly await his descent into the horrific with Renfield. Cage played historian, cryptographer, and treasure hunter Benjamin Gates in the first two installments of the action series. With the assistance of archivist Dr. Abigail Chase, computer expert Riley Poole, and his father, Patrick, Gates looks into artifacts with significant connections to American history. Despite receiving mixed reviews, viewers overwhelmingly favored the first two National Treasure movies. While Disney has concentrated its efforts on the National Treasure: Edge of History television series, there is a good likelihood that a third feature-length adventure will be produced.

In celebration of the launch of National Treasure: Edge of History on Disney+, E! Online sat down with Jerry Bruckheimer to talk about the development of the franchise. The long-awaited National Treasure 3 is still in progress, and plans for its big-screen release were confirmed by the producer in an upbeat update. Below is what Bruckheimer revealed:

We said we’d like to make another National Treasure and they said, ‘Sure, let’s come up with a new cast.’ At the same time, we were developing National Treasure for the theaters with Nicolas Cage—which we still are. So, that’s ongoing.

Why National Treasure 3 Is Getting More Attention

After The Sorcerer’s Apprentice’s dismal box office performance and Nicolas Cage’s apparent decline as a box office name, talks for a prospective National Treasure 3 reportedly ceased in the middle of the 2010s. Cage cited this as the reason. But Bruckheimer has consistently stayed upbeat about trying to make a third movie because he thought moviegoers would still be interested. Finding a plot that Disney is ready to support has proven to be the largest challenge for National Treasure 3’s development, according to both the producer and series director Jon Turtletaub.

Despite these difficulties, National Treasure 3 has recently begun to acquire momentum due to a number of factors, including Nicolas Cage’s return to fame as a result of films like Pig, Mandy, and The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, among others. Additionally, Disney started moving toward deeper development when they hired Chris Bremner from Bad Boys for Life to write a new script. This was done while they were also working on the sequel Disney+ show, which will once again feature Justin Bartha as Riley and Harvey Keitel as former FBI agent Peter Sandusky. The National Treasure: Edge of Secrets showrunners Cormac and Marianne Wibberley have also hinted at their intentions to try and bring Cage on board by drawing parallels between their encounter with Jess, the show’s main character, and Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It would be fascinating to see if Disney tries to ride the steam from the TV show and Cage’s return and finally get the film completed, even while Bruckheimer continues to be bullish for National Treasure 3. After receiving unfavorable reviews just a week after its debut, National Treasure: Edge of History’s studio will probably be monitoring its viewership figures to assess the likelihood of a season 2 as well as whether or not to properly invite Cage back for another theatrical adventure. Viewers can watch brand-new episodes of National Treasure: Edge of History every Wednesday on Disney+ as they wait for official word on a potential National Treasure 3 release. Source: E! Online
