Can a house be cursed? Well, after watching The Haunting of Hill House you must be thinking whether the terrifying show is based on a true event or not?
Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House is one of the most terrifying stories we have seen recently. The series tells the story of the Crain family as they spend their summer at the most haunted house in America. The couple Olivia and Hugh Crain move to Hill House with their five kids, and this is where the story begins. However, you must be wondering where the story got its inspiration from? Or the haunted house is real or not? Well, we have the answers to your questions.
The Haunting of Hill House based on a novel
The web series is based on Shirley Jackson’s novel of the same name.
The series brings back most of the book’s character names but also gave them new roles. For instance, the novel tells the tale of a paranormal activity investigator who recruits a group of volunteers at random to stay with him at the Hill House. While, on the other hand, the series focuses on a family in a haunted house. According to the original book, the Netflix adaptation added more elements that would be relevant for a modern-day adaptation.
The Haunting of Hill House is cursed:
Reportedly, the novel is inspired by real-life events. However, the book isn’t based on anything Shirley herself experienced. But it was inspired by Sarah Winchester’s story who rebuilt a farmhouse in San Jose. Sarah has been tortured by the guilt and believed her fortune from being an heiress was haunted. After her husband’s death, she moved to California and for 38 years, rebuilt the house into what became known as the Winchester Mystery House.
According to Smithsonian magazine, Winchester was a socialite who cut herself off from her circle and the world. In fact, she focused on the mansion. She is said to have built it for the ghosts “pleasure or perhaps as a way to elude them”
