Ego, the living planet, Father to the MCU’s Star-Lord is back in business in the comics, serving someone far worse than him.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s storyline, Ego the Living Planet, played by Kurt Russel, is father to the thief turned hero, Peter Quill a.k.a. Star-Lord. As shocking as it may be, Star Lord’s half-alien DNA was the key that helped him wield the Power Stone for as long as he did in Guardians of the Galaxy vol 1. In terms of being a parent, Ego was a terrible one, putting a tumour inside Peter’s mother and killing his uncountable children.
This eventually led to Star-Lord and his team of misfits called Guardians of the Galaxy, to kill him and end his atrocity, however, he just returned to the comics, a harbinger to a much greater threat for the universe. Will the new and improved guardians be able to stop him?
The Peril In The Comics
The Guardians were finally receiving the honour they deserved in the comics. The Galactic Council finally started to support them and they became the official heroes of the cosmos with brand new uniforms and a bigger team. But their celebration was short-lived as they discovered one of their old enemies returning to threaten their existence. What’s worse was that Ego wasn’t the only threat, but he was serving somebody even deadlier than him. Although the comics and the MCU have been heading in different directions with nowhere near similar stories.
Unlike the MCU, Ego was neither a celestial nor Star Lord’s father in the comics. Ego’s origin in the comics takes him back to a scientist named Egros who merged his life force with that of his planet during a supernova event. Whatever his may origin may be, Ego is one of the most fearsome foes, as there is not much that we can do to fight him, I mean he’s a planet what are you going to do? Hit him with your car?
Ego Returns
In Guardians of the Galaxy #14 from writer Al Ewing and artist Juan Frigeri, the guardians break into a small group consisting of Drax, Quasar, Phyla-Vell, and Marvel Boy, in order to investigate the Skrull fire cult. With their sight too fixated on the fire cult, the Guardians landed on Ego’s surface, without knowing it was him. During their investigations, the Guardians discover that the fire cult is attempting to cast a dark spell using the power of a constellation. They also learn that Ego and the Skrull fire cult have joined hands and Ego starts attacking the Guardians with tendrils emerging from his surface. Ego also reveals that he is a herald to a higher power.
Meanwhile, Doctor Doom attacks the rest of the Guardians in order to steal the Sword of Space and the two incidents seem to be connected. In Marvel comics, the word “herald” is often used in relation to Galactus which suggests that he may also return in the upcoming issues. A dark spell and Ego being a herald? Maybe the fire cult is planning t revive Galactus who was recently killed by Thor. This theory may be correct in the context of the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy event, “The Last Annihilation”. With one problem rising after another, the Guardians of the Galaxy sure are in big trouble.
