According to Deadline, the Top Gun sequel has become the most-watched film to ever make its home debut on the platform. The movie, which follows Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell played by Tom Cruise, had its streaming debut on December 22 and broke Sonic the Hedgehog’s previous record for the biggest opening weekend by 60%. When talking about a movie’s performance on their services, Paramount+ didn’t provide specific numbers for the debut, although this is common practice for most streaming services.
Tanya Giles, Chief Programming Officer, Paramount Streaming, commented on the movie’s success during its first weekend on Paramount+, saying, “We are happy to witness the movie’s huge, record-breaking success by having its premiere become the most watched movie on Paramount+. We continue to gain from Paramount Pictures’ highly anticipated theatrical hits, which are added to the service and give fans a new way to view and rewatch their favorite movies.”
And if that weren’t enough, other Tom Cruise movies caught on to Top Gun: Maverick‘s streaming popularity. Top Gun from 1986 benefited from it in terms of platform. The first movie had a 400% increase in viewers from those anticipating Top Gun double features. The Mission: Impossible franchise from Paramount Pictures saw a 140 percent gain on the streamer during the same time period, so even other Cruise titles saw a significant uptick.

The movie made $126.7 million in its first three days of release and $160.5 million over the Memorial Day holiday weekend’s four days.
