Drax The Destroyer is done with the MCU after Dave Bautista feels unpleased with Drax’s comical portrayal.
The Guardians Of The Galaxy team is falling apart, crumbling piece by piece. The original members of the Guardians of the Galaxy consisted of Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax the destroyer, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot. The Guardians lost Gamora to Thanos in his quest to acquire the Soul Stone and now they are about to lose another one of their original members (well sort of). Dave Bautista, former wrestler “Batista”, is reportedly leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Guardians of the Galaxy after his next project. That means that James Gunn’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3” will be the last time we see Bautista’s Drax the destroyer on the big screen. Let’s find out more about the circumstances that led to Bautista’s decision.
Dave Bautista’s Decision
Dave Batista has openly stated that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 will be the last time he will play the character of Drax the destroyer in the MCU. Since then everybody has been wondering what led to him taking such serious steps and what would be the future of Drax the destroyer. People have speculated that his character would meet his end in the upcoming threequel of Guardians of the Galaxy as a direct result of his departure from the MCU.
Responding to a Tweet from IGN about his departure, Bautista stated that Drax would not die in Guardians of the Galaxy 3, rather, he would be re-casted for the years to come. “Drax isn’t going anywhere. He just won’t be played by this dude! by the time G3 comes out I’ll be 54 years old for god’s sake! I’m expecting everything to start sagging any second now” he stated. As we know that Gotg 3 is James Gunn’s last project in the MCU and what a bond both of them share, so Bautista wanting to leave with his friend is perfectly understandable. But there are certain aspects that drove him to take this decision.
Dave’s Beef With The MCU
Dave Bautista has revealed that the way Drax has been portrayed so far in the MCU has also contributed to his motivations to leave. He has always expressed how much he loves the character and what it means to him, but the silly attitude that he has been asked to undertake has certainly ruined the character’s charm. In the comics, Drax the Destroyer is a total badass, a being with immense strength and supreme fighting skills. He was specifically reared to kill Thanos, which he even succeeds in accomplishing.
Contradictorily, the MCU has always witnessed Drax as a goofy character with payback-obsessed simple-mindedness. The possibilities of what his character may have been having very much upset him and made him angry. In an interview with Collider, Bautista opened up about how he feels about Drax and about what the MCU did to him. “I think they really missed the ball on Drax. He has such a great backstory. Selfishly, as a performer, that would have given me the opportunity to show different sides of Drax, emotionally. And physically as well. Because, if you notice, Drax, although he looks like a badass, you look at him and he looks terrifying, but Drax gets his ass kicked more than any other Marvel character… The whole “Destroyer” thing they just threw that out the window… people just fell so in love with the comedic side of Drax they tapped into that, then they tapped into it more, then they really dug a hole into it.
But we missed a huge boat on that character and I don’t think it’ll ever come back around. But I’m really just looking forward to finishing out this whole journey” he stated. It surely is heartbreaking that we would never get to see Bautista’s Drax and his funny actions, but we cannot expect Dave to keep playing the role if he is not happy with it. The fans would certainly miss him and his goofy fun after his last appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy.
