Michael Scott is one of the most iconic characters Steve played in his career. He played the hilarious regional branch manager for paper distribution company Dunder Mifflin Inc. from The Office. The character was filled with such complexity. However, Steve’s storyline as Michael Scott ended in 2011, in an episode where the character can be seen moving to Colorado with fiancée Holly.
Why leaving “The Office” was torture for Steve Carell:
It was not less than heartbreak for the fans of “The Office” when Steve left the show. Also, it was not easy for Steve to quit the show, especially when he has been a part of it for a long. When Steve said goodbye to the show, it changed the show forever. The 58-year-old actor played Michael Scott for seven seasons. He revealed the farewell episode was like an ‘emotional torture’ for him. Steve expressed why leaving the show and why it was difficult to say goodbye to his character Scott.
In a podcast interview, Steve said “It was almost more than I bargained for…I had goodbye scenes with everyone in the cast and it was emotional torture…it was like just fraught with emotion and joy and sadness and nostalgia”
Why Steve Carell almost didn’t make it back to The Office finale:
Steve Carell came back for a small cameo at the end of The Office season 9, but in reality that almost didn’t happen! In the last episodes of The Office season 9, fans see the wedding of Dwight and Angela. This allowed a hope for fans to see a reunion. When it was asked to Carell if he would make a comeback in season 9, but he declined that it wouldn’t make sense for the character of Michael. In fact, the creator of the show Greg Daniels said that he wouldn’t make an appearance in the final episode.
While the finale episode was airing fans were hoping to see Michael in the finale episode. And the actor reprised his role as Michael in the series finale of The Office. However, the makers wanted to surprise everyone. Despite all the previous statements, it’s likely that Michael’s return was the secret plan all along.
