Both Xbox Series X and PS5’s battle is going to have backward compatibility and looks like they are ready for it. Sony is not very sure about the abilities of PS5 as it trusts that the “overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 titles will be playable on PS5”. However, Xbox Series X is capable of running every Xbox One game.
What Lance McDonald, the popular streamer has to say?
But according to Lance McDonald, the popular streamer, PS5 can run any PS4 game but not very well.
Lance McDonald tweeted saying, “There’s been some confusion about this in the past and I can clear it up now. The PlayStation 5 can run all PlayStation 4 games without per-game whitelisting. Sony continues [sic.] to test titles but the system will not prevent you from launching untested games.”
McDonald deleted the previous tweet and to justify it he tweeted another tweet and deleted it as well. This later tweet read:
“I deleted a tweet out of respect for the platform holder, feel free to interpret that however, you like.”
Will Sony Whitelist the games to launch on PS5?
So, does it mean that backward compatibility will work on PS5 as and when its launched next year? Since PS5 is not launched yet, the possibilities of its improved efficiency are quite high. Also, Sony is still testing the games. Its Sony’s call to make the whitelisted games just for the PS5, as soon as it is released. However, this approach has its own pros and cons.
With this approach, Sony along with its partners will have more dictating powers regarding the games that will work or not. Although the most favorite game of many, Indie that works smoothly on PS5 may not make its presence in the top 100 PS4 titles. This is even if Sony says that it will include all top 1oo PS4 title games at the launch.
The PS5 launch date is still not out. We will get to know about it in the coming future.
