We all can agree that in the past decade, DC comics had a very bumpy ride in their DCEU-mobile with most of their movies being a hit-or-miss due to the divisive nature of the movies and characters. Although Marvel has successfully completed the character arcs of their main characters and is way ahead of DC in terms of revenue and franchise fan following, it seems DC has decided to gear up for and go all out with all the announcements and movies going into production; one such announcement being Emerald Fennell writing the Zatanna movie.
Who is Emerald Fennell?
Emerald Lilly Fennell is an Oxford graduate who has worked as an actress, director, and writer in many movies and TV series like The Crown. She is the writer and director of the critically acclaimed dark comedy thriller Promising Young Woman (2020). For screenplays alone, Emerald Fennell has won an Academy Award, a British Academy Film Award, a Critics’ Choice Award, a Dorian Award, an Independent Spirit Award, a Writers Guild of America Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award and also received multiple nominations. Apart from acting, directing, and writing, she has also authored 4 books: Shiverton Hall (2012), The Creeper (2014), Rollercoasters Shiverton (2014), and Monsters (2015).
Although a certain vocal minority online have issued their concerns regarding upcoming promising directors being tapped for blockbuster productions but most of the reactions online have been positive overall, especially now that Zatanna movie has a talented writer attached to it.
Who is Zatanna?
Think of her as the female Harry Potter of the DC comics. Zatanna Zatara is one of the most powerful sorceresses in the DC comics. Being the daughter of a stage magician with actual magic Giovanni “John” Zatara and a Homo magus known as Sindella, Zatanna’s magic is genetic. That being said, it should be noted that in order to use magic, she has to cast spells by mouthing the words backward. For her to cast a healing spell on herself, she would have to mouth the words ‘Heal me’ backwards i.e. the spell would be ‘Leah em’.

This will be Zatanna’s first appearance in the DCEU franchise. As of now, Zatanna has no director attached to it. Who knows, maybe Emerald Fennel ends up directing the movie too as she has received awards and nominations in that department as well. Talk about being an over-achiever. Being the member of Justice League Dark and constantly paired with John Constantine as his love interest in the comics, it would be interesting to see how they expand their DCEU and introduce the mystical-occult-magic side to it. As long time DC fans, we are just glad to have Emerald Fennell on board for Zatanna and hopefully for more future projects.
